Village Market Day in the Heilbronn Hinterland

Hardthausen am Kocher is located in the northwestern Heilbronn region, nestled between the Kocher and Jagst valleys. The municipality was formed in 1971 from the three villages of Gochsen, Kochersteinsfeld, and Lampoldshausen. In the Gochsen district, the largest of the three with just under 1,700 inhabitants, local associations have been organising the Gochsener Markttag for years — a traditional morning event on the last Saturday in May. In 2026, the market day will take place on 30 May from 10:00 to 13:00 around the historic bakehouse and the village community centre.

Bakehouse and Village Community Centre as the Hub

The Gochsen Bakehouse — one of the few historic bakehouses still in operation in the Heilbronn region — is the natural centrepiece of the market day. The community of associations fires it up the evening before and bakes fresh farm bread, plaited yeast cake, and sweet farm sheet cakes on the market day itself. Buying a piece of wood-fired bread here offers a small but authentic connection to village tradition. The adjacent village community centre serves as a common room for the associations and as an indoor area in case of bad weather.

Market Stalls from Regional Suppliers

Around 12 to 15 stalls offer regional products: vegetables from the farm, eggs from the Gochsen estate, honey from a beekeeper in Kochersteinsfeld, fresh herbs, apple juices from traditional orchards, sausages and ham from the village butcher, cheese from the Berghof. In addition, there is handicrafts from local female artists — embroidery, felt work, wood carvings. A special speciality: the Gochsener Most (apple cider), produced by the local traditional orchard initiative. It is a mixed cider made from regional apple varieties, sold only on a few days a year.

Community Spirit

The focus is less on commercial sales and more on the village community. Neighbours meet neighbours, grandparents take their grandchildren to the bakehouse, young families meet at the bread and pretzel stand. The associations — sports club, singing club, fire brigade, women's association — present their work, recruit new members, and distribute flyers for their own events throughout the year. The market day marks the start of the summer festival season in the Heilbronn hinterland.

Municipality of Hardthausen — Three Villages, One Administration

Hardthausen am Kocher, with just over 4,000 inhabitants, is a small but vibrant municipality. The three districts of Gochsen, Kochersteinsfeld, and Lampoldshausen have each preserved their own identity. Lampoldshausen is known beyond the municipal borders for the DLR Institute for Space Propulsion — a research facility of the German Aerospace Center for engine testing. Gochsen, with its historic bakehouse and market day, is the traditional anchor of the municipality.
