Large Christmas market between Marktplatz and Johannisplatz — over 70 stalls in a medieval old town
The Gmünder Weihnachtsmarkt is one of the longest Advent offerings in Southern Germany: around eight weeks — from October 29, 2026, to mid/late December — the market, spread across two main areas, draws visitors into the medieval old town of Schwäbisch Gmünd. The Marktplatz with the Heilig-Kreuz-Münster (one of the most important Gothic hall churches in Southern Germany) forms the main area; the nearby Johannisplatz expands the market space. A total of over 70 exhibitors.
Schwäbisch Gmünd was an important imperial city of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in the Middle Ages and is today one of the best-preserved old towns in the Swabian Jura. The half-timbered houses, the remnants of the city walls, the Heilig-Kreuz-Münster (a model for Ulm Minster) and the narrow alleys create an extraordinary Advent atmosphere. The city utilizes this historic substance with light installations, decorative fir trees, and stylish illumination of the historic houses.
From November 6 to 13, 2026, the traditional Nikolausmarkt (St. Nicholas Market) takes place within the market area — a separate, shorter format focusing on Saint Nicholas of Myra. Saint Nicholas himself visits the children; nativity scene exhibitions, special music programs, and activities for children accompany these weeks. Afterward, the main Christmas market with its classic assortment takes over.
Over the eight weeks, different exhibitors alternate; some are present for the entire duration, others for weekends:
Schwäbisch Gmünd (approx. 61,000 inhabitants, Ostalbkreis, AGS 08136) is one of the most historically important cities in Eastern Württemberg and belongs to the Staufen era axis between Ulm, Stuttgart, and Heidenheim. The medieval substance is well-preserved — the old town is now the stage for numerous events throughout the year. The Christmas market makes intensive use of this backdrop and is one of the most important Advent offerings in the Ostwürttemberg region.
The 2026 edition spans nearly eight weeks, making it one of the longest Christmas markets in Southern Germany. The unusual length allows for a changing assortment: weekend exhibitors, weekly exhibitors, special themed exhibitors. This keeps the market offerings fresh throughout the long weeks.
The Nikolausmarkt from November 6 to 13 is integrated into the market's flow — a mini-festival with a focus on Saint Nicholas, nativity scene exhibitions, and children's activities. The city of Schwäbisch Gmünd utilizes the medieval old town setting with illuminations and light installations that visually enhance the market experience.
Free admission to the entire market area. Food and drinks at market prices. Mulled wine and hot drinks available with a reusable cup deposit system.
Train: Schwäbisch Gmünd station (Remsbahn line from Stuttgart, approx. 50 minutes), 10 minutes walk to the Marktplatz.
Car: B29 or A7 exit Aalen/Westhausen; parking garages on the outskirts.
Free admission to the entire market area.
The most beautiful time is late afternoon/evening when the lights turn on — the medieval old town with its illumination is particularly impressive. Combine your visit with the Heilig-Kreuz-Münster for a deep cultural experience.
