Flat city marathon with six distances in the St. Wendel region
The Globus-Marathon St. Wendel is one of Saarland's most important popular runs. What sets it apart from comparable events is its deliberately inclusive program structure: six different distances are offered, from the children's marathon to the 5 km hobby run to the full marathon. This makes it both a competition for ambitious athletes and a family festival for hobby runners.
The 2026 program includes: Marathon (42.195 km), Half Marathon (21.1 km), 10-kilometer run, 4x10-kilometer team run, 5-kilometer hobby run, and Children's Marathon (approx. 1 km, ages 6 and up). The start times are staggered: 9:15 AM 10 km run, 9:40 AM Marathon, 10:45 AM Children's Marathon, 11:30 AM Half Marathon, 1:00 PM 5 km run.
The course runs along a 21.1 km city circuit, which is completed twice for the marathon. It is predominantly flat asphalt through the St. Wendel city center and its surroundings – ideal for personal best times. Along the route, there are refreshment stations, live music points, and – this is the Saarland touch – numerous spectators applauding the runners with Schwenker grills on the street.
A special feature of the 18th edition in 2026: the star guest is Tobias Angerer, one of Germany's most successful cross-country skiers, Olympic champion, and multiple World Cup winner. He will run a distance himself and be available for selfies and conversations. This tradition – a prominent guest from endurance sports each year – is part of the marathon's identity.
St. Wendel, the district town of the St. Wendel district and, with around 26,000 inhabitants, the administrative and educational center of northern Saarland, has positioned itself as a sports city over the last two decades. The Globus-Marathon, Bostalsee Triathlon, international athletics meetings, and the nearby Bostalsee lake as a nature park make St. Wendel a focal point of the Saarland sports scene.
The main sponsor is Globus, the retail chain based in St. Wendel (Globus-Markthallen). With its headquarters and main office located locally, Globus is deeply connected to the city – sponsoring the marathon is a classic example of lived corporate affiliation. A rare and valuable constellation in German popular runs.
The district town of St. Wendel is the organizer. The 21.1 km city circuit is run twice for the marathon; otherwise, the course is flat and suitable for PBs. Tobias Angerer, Olympic champion in cross-country skiing, runs as the star guest.
