Kerwa Customs Since 1877
The Glashütten Zeltkerwa has an unusual origin story: in 1877, a mayor mistakenly granted a dance permit for an unclear date. The Royal District Office of Bayreuth subsequently clarified that "two days of Kirchweih" were permissible – thus establishing August as the festival period. Since then, the Kerwa has been celebrated as a secular dance festival.
Religious Background
Although the name sounds ecclesiastical, the Kerwa has little to do with an actual church consecration. The date derives from the fact that the parish church of Mistelgau – to which Glashütten belonged – is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. The secular Kerwa developed independently of this religious connection.
The Zeltkerwa Today
Today, the "Gesellschaft Zufriedenheit" youth club keeps the traditional August dance festival alive. In the festival tent, typical Franconian elements – brass and dance music, Franconian delicacies, and social gatherings – create the atmosphere.
Village Festival for the Region
The Zeltkerwa is primarily a communal entertainment and village festival that honors the region's cultural heritage and attracts visitors from the entire Bayreuth district and the Franconian Switzerland.
