Party on the Gifhorn market square on the eve of May 1st
The 'Tanz in den Mai' is a firm fixture in the annual calendar in many German cities. In Gifhorn, the event on the market square has become established and has evolved into one of the most popular open-air dates of spring. The concept is deliberately accessible: free admission, a central location, a well-known DJ set, and the involvement of local clubs.
The traditional start is marked by the Maypole raising, handled by the traditional dance group of USK Gifhorn. The uniformed members of the Uniformed Schützen Korps demonstrate the raising of the pole in classic style – a scene that combines tradition and town festival.
At 7:00 PM, Mayor Matthias Nerlich takes up the mallet and taps the keg. The first mug is traditionally drawn by the mayor himself and presented to a guest from the audience. The keg tapping is considered the official kickoff for the dancing part of the evening.
DJ Bernd Bendig provides the musical backdrop, curating a set for a broad audience: from 80s and 90s classics to current hits and sing-along Schlager songs. The mix ensures that young and old alike will be dancing in the market square. The music plays until midnight, after which the party moves to individual venues in the city.
The cooperation with the Gifhorn Volunteer Fire Department is an essential part of the concept. The department provides organizational and catering support for the event: bratwurst, drinks, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the fire department. Thus, the festival is linked to local volunteer work.
The event has established itself as a firm fixture in Gifhorn's spring calendar. The blend of tradition (Maypole, keg tapping) and modern party (DJ set) allows all generations to engage with it.
The free admission and the involvement of the volunteer fire department represent a community-oriented format without barriers.
