About GeSoFe Haarzopf
GeSoFe Haarzopf — edition 2026
The 2026 edition continues the proven concept: neighbourhood festival in Bürgerpark, association stalls, refreshments at fair prices, family programme. The exact programme will be organised by the Residents' Association together with local clubs and initiatives from Haarzopf and Fulerum.
As always, the festival is a focal point in the district's calendar — many residents meet here for the first time after winter, make contacts, and get involved in the associations. The proceeds go to the Residents' Association's activities.

Neighbourhood Festival with Tradition
The GeSoFe — the unusual abbreviation stands for “Gemeinsames Sommerfest” (Joint Summer Festival) — is a classic neighbourhood festival in southern Essen. The organiser is the Bürgerverein Essen-Haarzopf/Fulerum e.V., which has been committed to social cohesion in the district for decades. The venue is the central Bürgerpark Haarzopf, a green neighbourhood park with playgrounds and seating areas.
Haarzopf and Fulerum in Southern Essen
Haarzopf and Fulerum are two smaller districts in the southwest of Essen, nestled in a comparatively green and quiet residential area near Mülheim an der Ruhr. Unlike the districts closer to the city centre, where major festivals like Essen Original take place, Haarzopf thrives on a strong sense of neighbourhood awareness — clubs, church communities, and initiatives shape community life.
Format and Programme
The GeSoFe is a typical neighbourhood festival with a local character: stalls from associations, coffee and cake, sausages from the grill, games for children, and live music from regional bands or choirs. The Bürgerpark with its green spaces offers ample room and creates a relaxed atmosphere.
District Culture in a Ruhr Area Metropolis
With over 580,000 inhabitants, Essen is one of the largest cities in North Rhine-Westphalia — which is precisely why neighbourhood festivals like the GeSoFe are important: they create bonds within the district and draw neighbours out of the anonymity of the big city. The festival is one of the beautiful, rather undiscovered cornerstones of Essen's summer calendar.
Neighbourhood Festival with Tradition
The GeSoFe is an example of an increasingly important category of festival in German cities: the volunteer-run neighbourhood festival, which manages without major sponsors and relies entirely on the self-organisation of the residents' association. Unlike the major Essen city festivals (Essen Original, Lichtwochen, Stadtwerke-Weihnachtsmarkt), the GeSoFe has a clearly family-oriented character — and is an authentic picture of how neighbourhood life functions in Essen's outer districts.
Tips for Your Visit
The festival is ideal for families with small children, older people, and anyone who wants to spend a relaxed afternoon in a green environment. Those who want to learn more about the Haarzopf district can combine their visit with a walk along the nearby paths to Margarethenhöhe — one of Germany's historic garden cities, a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status, and one of the defining landmarks of southwestern Essen.
