Bavarian Volksfest and American Way of Life on the Training Area
Grafenwöhr in the northern Upper Palatinate has been home to a military training area since 1908 – today the largest military training area in Europe and one of the most important US military bases in Germany. Once a year, the US Army Garrison Bavaria opens the otherwise closed Camp Algier to the public and, together with the town of Grafenwöhr, hosts the German-American Volksfest – a unique blend of Bavarian folk festival tradition and American culture.
In 2026, the festival will take place from July 31 to August 2. For three days, beer steins mingle with burgers, beer tent atmosphere with country music, and roast pork with BBQ ribs. Over 100 stalls offer a mixed selection of Bavarian specialties, American street food, crafts, and souvenirs. A festival tent stage alternates between Bavarian brass bands and American country and rock bands.
The festival includes a classic amusement area with a Ferris wheel and rides, but also features specifics only possible at this location: demonstrations of US military vehicles, exhibitions by the Garrison, and encounters with US soldiers and their families. It offers a rare glimpse into German-American military relations, which have shaped the region for over 70 years.
Grafenwöhr is more than just a training area – it's a symbol of German-American relations since World War II. Thousands of US soldiers and their families live in the region, and German-American schools, sports clubs, and joint events have been part of daily life for decades. The Volksfest is both folklore and a political signal: a commitment to transatlantic friendship, celebrated annually with a Ferris wheel, roast chicken, and burgers.
The 2026 edition of the German-American Volksfest Grafenwöhr runs for three festival days from Friday, July 31, to Sunday, August 2. The US Army Garrison Bavaria and the town of Grafenwöhr are jointly organizing a program that brings the two cultural circles together: Bavarian beer steins alongside American cups, roast pork alongside BBQ ribs, brass bands alongside country bands.
Highlights include the festival tent program, live music with bands from Germany and the USA, the Ferris wheel offering views over the extensive military grounds, and the US Army demonstrations with vehicles, equipment, and troops. The stalls offer American classics like hot dogs, burgers, and donuts alongside Bavarian specialties like roast chicken, pretzels, and grilled fish.
