Family program on superstition and spooky readings in the historic castle
Posterstein Castle is located in the Sprottental valley in the Altenburger Land district, on the border with Saxony. First documented in 1191, it is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in East Thuringia. In the 14th and 15th centuries, it was the seat of justice — negotiations, convictions, and occasional executions took place in the historic council chamber. The museum uses this past for the Ghost Day: a family program that combines real historical criminal cases with superstition, legends, and Halloween atmosphere.
From 11:00 AM to 4:30 PM, families explore the castle on a puzzle trail. At various stations, visitors encounter historical figures — the offended neighbor, the robbed farmer, the alleged witch — and learn about the real criminal cases handed down from the castle. The superstition of the 16th and 17th centuries is embedded in the actual court records found in the museum's archive. It's family history to be explored at your own pace, without registration.
On the evening of October 31st, starting at 8:00 PM, an exclusive spooky reading will take place in the castle's historic courtroom. Ronny Ristok and Franziska Huberty will read from classics of the horror genre — Poe, Hoffmann, chilling tales of the Black Romantic movement. Admission is €15, including a welcome drink. Advance booking by phone is required (limited seats) at +49 34496 22595.
After the castle puzzle, families can follow the Halloween trail to neighboring Nöbdenitz, where Halloween is celebrated on a larger scale — pumpkin competition, children's program, costume parade. The combination of Posterstein's history and Nöbdenitz's Halloween staging makes the day a regional experience.
The Posterstein Castle Museum is one of the most dedicated small museums in East Thuringia and runs a highly regarded blog (blog.burg-posterstein.de) about the stories and backgrounds of the castle collection. Ghost Day has been a regular fixture in the annual program since 2023.
As in previous years, Halloween provides the framework for the double program: in the afternoon, a publicly accessible family offering, and in the evening, a literary treat for a select audience. Both formats have been a firm part of the museum's annual program since 2023.
