Gartenstadt Drewitz – Award-Winning District Renovation

The Gartenstadtfest Drewitz is the annual district festival of the Gartenstadt Drewitz in southern Potsdam. Drewitz is one of the most impressive examples of the sustainable renovation of a GDR prefabricated housing estate in Germany: from the originally grey, large-scale housing complex of the 1980s, a comprehensive renovation and upgrading program since 2009 has transformed it into a climate- and socially-friendly garden city with climate gardens, car-reduced courtyards, new playgrounds, and a significantly strengthened district center.

14th Edition 2026

The Gartenstadtfest celebrates its 14th edition in 2026 on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 2 PM to 9 PM. The venue is the Wendeschleife and the adjacent Klimagarten im Quartier at the intersection of Slatan-Dudow-Straße / Konrad-Wolf-Allee – the central axis of the garden city. The festival is organized by Stadtteilarbeit Stern-Drewitz, an association of the city, housing association (ProPotsdam), and local initiatives.

Program Character

The Gartenstadtfest has the character of a curated neighborhood festival with the following elements:

• Stage program with local bands, school choirs, and dance schools.
• Gastronomy with international specialties from multicultural Drewitz.
• Neighborhood activities: communal cake buffet, hands-on stations, swap corners.
• Family offerings: bouncy castle, carousel, crafts, face painting.
• Club presentations: sports clubs, social welfare organizations, initiatives from the neighborhood.
• Climate garden tours through the award-winning redevelopment planning of the garden city.

Drewitz and Potsdam

Drewitz is a young district in southern Potsdam (established in 1989), located on the southern city border. With around 6,000 inhabitants, it is one of the more densely populated districts of the Brandenburg state capital. The Gartenstadt renovation has received multiple awards (German Urban Development Award 2014, Federal Award for Urban Greenery 2020) and is considered a model for East German prefabricated housing renovation.

Admission and Arrival

Admission to the Gartenstadtfest is free. The festival grounds are easily accessible via public transport from Berlin-Brandenburg via the Wendeschleife Drewitz, where ViP tram line 91 terminates. Approximately a 25-minute tram ride from Potsdam Central Station.
