The oldest fair in Lower Saxony — since 1508 in Leer (East Frisia)
When the Gallimarkt in Leer opens, East Frisia's second-largest city transforms into a festival ground of extraordinary size. With a history spanning over 500 years, the Gallimarkt is the oldest fair in Lower Saxony and ranks among the ten most popular folk festivals in Germany. Every year, hundreds of thousands flock to Leer to enjoy the unique festival experience.
First documented in 1508, the Gallimarkt dates back to the feast day of St. Gallus on October 16th. Originally established as a livestock and general market, it has evolved over the centuries into a folk festival that uniquely combines tradition and modern festival culture. This history makes the Gallimarkt a national cultural heritage.
The official opening takes place on Wednesday, October 14th, 2026, at 11:30 AM at the old town hall. The mayor and dignitaries of the city will open the market with a ceremony that shapes the entire city's life for the coming five days. Afterwards, visitors will flock into the city.
With around 250 rides and stalls, the Gallimarkt is one of the largest fairs in Germany. Ferris wheel, roller coaster, classic carousels, modern high-speed rides, shooting galleries, lottery stalls, candy stands, snack bars with potato pancakes and East Frisian specialties — the range is overwhelming.
One of the emotional highlights is the lantern parade on Saturday, October 17th, 2026, starting at 6:45 PM. With illuminated lanterns, the showmen, their families, and participating clubs march through the city center. This procession of lights is a magical moment that makes the connection between tradition and festive joy tangibly experienceable.
On Friday, October 16th, 2026, at 10:00 PM, a grand fireworks display will light up the sky over the harbor. The reflection on the water lends the spectacle additional radiance, and thousands gather at the harbor to witness the pyrotechnic highlight.
The Galliviehmarkt on October 13th and 14th, 2026, which immediately precedes the Gallimarkt, remains true to tradition. Thus, the festival complex also preserves its original function as a livestock market — a bridge between historical past and festive present.
The 518th edition marks the unbroken tradition of one of Europe's oldest fairs. The Gallimarkt attracts hundreds of thousands to Leer annually and is considered one of Germany's most atmospheric folk festivals, not least due to its lantern parade and harbor fireworks.
