Premiere — Showcase evening with three bands from Rhineland-Palatinate, panels, and networking formats
The jazz scene in Rhineland-Palatinate is diverse, yet spatially distributed: Mainz, Koblenz, Trier, Kaiserslautern, and Ludwigshafen form their own scenes with distinct venues, festivals, and musicians. However, unlike in larger federal states, they rarely share a common infrastructure and visibility. The Future Jazz Festival Mainz, celebrating its premiere in 2026, aims to bridge this gap: a statewide showcase format that presents and connects the current jazz scene of Rhineland-Palatinate, concentrated in an established Mainz cultural venue, with the prospect of a continuous series.
The organizer is KUZ — Kulturzentrum Mainz, one of Mainz's most significant cultural organizers with extensive experience in contemporary music, indie, jazz, singer-songwriter, hip-hop, and event formats ranging from concerts to clubs and cultural events. The KUZ on Dagobertstraße has established itself as Mainz's address for young, urban cultural audiences and, with its hall and atmosphere, offers a fitting setting for a festival that combines concerts with discussions.
The premiere edition in 2026 focuses on a deliberately compact format: one evening with three bands. This concentration allows the audience to experience all acts attentively and gives the bands a visible stage, rather than letting them get lost in an overloaded festival program. The lineup represents the breadth of the current Rhineland-Palatinate jazz scene: Die Motive des Richard W. with a modern, song-oriented jazz-pop approach, Julian Camargo & Band with a style rooted in jazz tradition and world music, and Fritschi/Heun as a duo or small group project with an experimental touch.
In addition to the concerts, panels and networking formats are part of the program. These formats are aimed at musicians, band leaders, bookers, promoters, journalists, and supporters of the regional jazz scene, aiming to improve networking among scene players. Topics include band financing, marketing, performance opportunities, funding programs, and cross-regional networking. With this combination of concerts and industry formats, the Future Jazz Festival follows a path that takes inspiration from established festivals like the Jazzwoche Hannover or the Jazzfest Berlin at the state policy level and adapts it for Rhineland-Palatinate.
The premiere edition in 2026 is conceived as a compact showcase evening that presents the current jazz scene of Rhineland-Palatinate in a concentrated format. Three bands with different styles — from modern jazz-pop to experimental small-group music — represent the breadth of the regional scene. Between and before the concerts, panels and networking formats will take place, aimed at musicians, band leaders, bookers, promoters, journalists, and supporters, to improve networking among scene players.
The exact program and schedule for 2026 will be published by KUZ Kulturzentrum Mainz in the summer of 2026. The premiere is designed as a foundation for a continuous series, with the goal of connecting and making the regional jazz scene in Mainz, Koblenz, Trier, Kaiserslautern, and Ludwigshafen visible in the medium term.
