Sustainability and Civic Engagement Festival in Fürth
While most city festivals focus on beer, music, and carousels, Fürth im Übermorgen takes a different approach: the festival sees itself as the city's Future Construction Site, bringing together everyone active in Fürth for a more sustainable, just, and livable community on the festival day. The motto: "Future of the City — We're Building It!"
More than 30 organizations jointly organize the festival. The range is impressive: the Youth Council of the City of Fürth, BUND Naturschutz, local Foodsharing initiatives, Repair Cafés and repair workshops, educational and environmental education organizations, neighborhood centers, associations, initiatives, and companies. Each organization designs its own station — interactive format, discussion round, workshop, exhibition. The city becomes an open workshop.
The festival day begins at 8:30 AM with the school program: Fürth schools send classes to thematic stations, covering topics from climate and mobility to nutrition. This educational block runs until 12:15 PM. In the afternoon (2:00 PM to 6:00 PM), the decentralized construction sites open throughout the city — different neighborhoods have their own hands-on activities. In the evening, starting at 7:00 PM, everyone gathers again at the market square for the evening program with a concert by the Sunday Morning Orchestra, the Stadtradeln competition award ceremony, and an artistic summary of the day by Martin Ellrodt.
The award ceremony for the Stadtradeln competition in the evening honors the Fürth residents who cycled the most kilometers for their city during the three-week campaign period before the festival day. Stadtradeln is a nationwide initiative for sustainable mobility — Fürth is among the cities with particularly high engagement.
Fürth, a city of around 130,000 inhabitants in the Nuremberg-Fürth-Erlangen-Schwabach metropolitan region, has set a clear focus on climate protection and urban development in recent years. The Fürth im Übermorgen festival is part of this strategic direction — an attempt to shape urban development participatively and visibly. It is not a classic Volksfest, but an event with ambition and impact.
The 2026 festival day is the next edition of Fürth im Übermorgen, the participatory sustainability festival of the Middle Franconian city. Over 30 partner organizations shape the program — the exact stations and workshops will be published on the festival website in the weeks leading up to the event.
The concept of the "Future Construction Site" is consistently maintained in language and visual design: hard hats, construction signs, and site notices become the festival's aesthetic. Anyone interested in urban development beyond abstract discussions will find themselves at home here.
