Werlte and the Hümmling Marksmen Tradition
Werlte is located in the center of Hümmling, a geest landscape in northwestern Emsland, and forms the economic and cultural center of the Samtgemeinde Werlte. The St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft is one of the town's traditional associations and is part of the federation of Hümmling Schützenvereine, which jointly cultivate the region's marksmen's culture under the umbrella of the Hümmling regional group. The combination of Catholic faith — symbolized by the patronage of St. Sebastian — and civil-village festival culture is a hallmark of Emsland's marksmen's culture.
Opening on the Market Square
The festival opening on Werlte's market square has a special symbolic character: the market square is the central meeting place of the town, and the ceremony on July 5th brings together not only the marksmen but the entire population. From 11 a.m., the marksmen will march onto the square in uniform, the Hümmling regional group will play, and the association boards will open the festival season with a festive welcome. Afterwards, the marksmen invite everyone to a joint "Frühschoppen" (morning pint) and to mingle with visitors.
The Hümmling Regional Group
The Hümmling regional group is an association of the Schützenvereine in the Hümmling area. It organizes overarching activities, competitions, and joint appearances at festivities. At the opening in Werlte, the regional group will appear in full strength, emphasizing the close ties between the Schützenvereine in Werlte, Sögel, Lorup, Esterwegen, and the surrounding villages.
Werlte's Marksmen's Culture
The Werlte Schützenbruderschaft holds its main festival with a king's shooting competition in the summer (a separate event in July with a breakfast buffet and proclamation of the king). The opening ceremony on July 5th in the market square serves as the kick-off and public manifestation of the marksmen's culture in the town and is open to all citizens and visitors.
