Spring start on the Altenessen market square
In Essen's south, they have the Margarethenhöhe, Villa Hügel, and the Folkwang Museum — the Essen North is more robust, industrial, honest. And its most important spring celebration is the Frühjahrskirmes on the Altenessen market square. The next edition of this Volksfest (folk festival), which is one of Essen's oldest funfair traditions, will take place from April 17th to 19th, 2026.
The Frühjahrskirmes Altenessen is not the largest funfair in the city — that role is played by the Cranger Kirmes or the Essener Lichtwochen. But it is one of the most characteristic: a compact, medium-sized square that combines the classics of the showman scene with the dense residential environment of the district. Expected are:
Sunday (April 19th, 2026) is an open shopping Sunday in Altenessen — the shops around the market square are open from 1 PM to 6 PM. This combines the funfair enjoyment with a classic family shopping spree: carousel first, then shopping, then more fries. Experience shows that Sunday is the busiest day for the showmen.
Altenessen is located in Essen's north. With around 50,000 inhabitants, it is larger than many independent medium-sized towns and has a distinct identity of its own — grown from the mining tradition and the working-class families of the Ruhr area. The Altenessener Marktplatz is its center: a market every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the year, several funfair dates spread across the year, and in between, open-air events and district festivals. The Frühjahrskirmes opens the season.
The funfair is organized in cooperation between the City of Essen (Market and Public Order Office) and the participating Essen showmen. The dates for all Essen funfair events are published on kirmes-essen.de.
The 2026 funfair will run in the usual three-day format. Opening on Friday at 3 PM, Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM each — prime time for families. On Sundays, many Essen residents combine the carousel with the open shopping Sunday in the surrounding shops.
Current dates and ride list: kirmes-essen.de.
Free admission. Ride tickets approx. €3–€5 per ride. Game stalls €1–€3 per game.
By bus/train: U17 or bus lines to "Altenessen Bahnhof" or "Altenessen Mitte". By car: A42 exit Essen-Altenessen, parking available at Allee-Center and in the surrounding residential streets — very busy on Sundays.
Sunday combines with the open shopping Sunday — the top day for families. An evening visit (from 7 PM) offers the best light show and attracts the youthful crowd to the bumper cars. Bring change (coins for the stalls).
