Bildstock – Former Mining District
Bildstock is one of the districts of the city of Friedrichsthal in the Saarbrücken district. Shaped by its hard coal mining past, Bildstock was one of the important mining sites in Saarland until the 21st century. Today, mining is history – but the active community life lives on. The annual Weihnachtsmarkt on Bildstocker Marktplatz is one of the district's most important community events.
Heimat- und Verkehrsverein as Organizer
The organizers are the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein (HVV) Friedrichsthal-Bildstock and the Heimatausschuss Bildstock, working in joint organization. Both committees foster the traditional community and customs life in the district and have shared the organization of the market since around 2010 – the 5th edition was documented on November 29, 2014, suggesting an annual market since about 2010.
Program with Children's Participation
The program focuses on community-oriented highlights: Advent songs by children (2:30 PM to 3:30 PM), visit from St. Nicholas at 5:00 PM, craft activities for children aged 3 and up. Musical contributions from local fanfares, pop- Schlager duos, and a trombone quartet alternate on the small stage. The market officially opens at 3:00 PM.
Classic Association Festival Format
With its manageable size and volunteer organization, the Bildstocker Weihnachtsmarkt offers an authentic experience. The stalls are primarily run by Bildstock associations, local craftspeople, and local history groups – no commercial vendors, but rather community engagement. The proceeds go towards the associations' activities and the district's social projects.
In the Saarbrücken District
The Saarbrücken district is the most populous district in Saarland, with the state capital at its center. Friedrichsthal, with its districts, is located in the northeastern part of the district. Those looking for a quiet alternative to the large Saarbrücken Christkindlmarkt will find a charming district market in Bildstock.
