About Freiluftkino Insel

Freiluftkino Insel has been a fixture of the Berlin summer cinema scene for years — known for its arthouse-oriented program and charmingly unpretentious atmosphere. Starting May 15, 2026, the season kicks off at a new location: Atelier Gardens on the southern edge of Tempelhofer Feld, on the grounds of the historic Berlin Union-Film. Indies, classics, silent films, documentaries, festival specials. Thursdays to Sundays from dusk.

A Move, Not a Farewell

Freiluftkino Insel was home to the RAW grounds in Friedrichshain for years — on a meadow between old railway workshops, with a Kreuzberg vibe and a regular audience of film buffs and locals. In 2026, the cinema is moving to the south of Berlin: to the Atelier Gardens site on Oberlandstraße, located directly on the southern edge of Tempelhofer Feld. The location is new, the concept remains.

Atelier Gardens — Where Films Are Made

Atelier Gardens is a newer cultural area on the grounds of the historic Berlin Union-Film Tempelhof. Legendary films have been produced here since the 1920s — Bob Fosse's "Cabaret" (1972), Wolfgang Becker's "Sonnenallee," and countless other classics. The film studio heritage is still visible on the premises (old sound studios, workshops) — the organizers play with this past, creating a cinema experience that considers the history of the location.

The Program: Arthouse, Classic, International

The Insel's program differs from commercial cinema: it primarily features independent films, contemporary German and European auteur cinema, classics (often in thematic series), silent films with live musical accompaniment, festival films from Berlinale, and documentaries. Most films are shown in their original language with German or English subtitles — a service that reaches Berlin's international audience.

Atmosphere

Seating with folding chairs, some blanket spots on the lawn, a small bar with beer, wine, and snacks. The screening only begins when it's truly dark — in midsummer, this means around 9:45 PM. Those who arrive early can experience the pre-show (short film, ads for local cinemas, sometimes an introductory talk). In case of rain, the screening will be rescheduled to a later date — tickets remain valid.

Berlin's Open-Air Cinema Tradition

Berlin has an unusually dense open-air cinema scene — Insel, Pompeji, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Schloss, Hasenheide, and many more. Insel positions itself as a curated cinema with a clear film selection, distinct from the mainstream open-air experience of large multiplex chains. Those who want to spend summer evenings with sophisticated cinema belong to the Insel clientele.

Freiluftkino Insel — edition 2026

The new season of Freiluftkino Insel starts on May 15, 2026 — for the first time at the new location Atelier Gardens at Tempelhofer Feld. Screening days Thursday to Sunday, with screenings starting shortly after sunset. Arthouse program, indies, classics, documentaries. Admission from €9.

The season starts on Friday, May 15, 2026. Until the end of September, the program runs four days a week — Thursday to Sunday. Screenings begin after sunset, meaning between 8:30 PM (May/September) and 10:15 PM (midsummer), depending on the season.

The new location, Atelier Gardens at Oberlandstraße 26-35, is accessible by bus 246, with S-Bahn connections via Südkreuz or Tempelhof. The grounds of the historic Berlin Union-Film offer a special atmosphere — those who arrive early can explore the area before the screening.

Programme Freiluftkino Insel 2026

The 2026 program will be released in several waves — the first screenings in May and June will be available from the end of April at freiluftkino-insel.de. The structure is based on experience:

  • Thursdays: often classics or thematic series (e.g., "Spring in Cinema", "Berlin Films")
  • Fridays: premiere slot, new indie films from Germany and Europe
  • Saturdays: audience favorites — popular indies, festival highlights, occasional classics
  • Sundays: often documentaries or a quieter program to end the weekend

Festival specials will be selectively presented — e.g., Berlinale revivals, silent film series with live piano or acoustic ensemble accompaniment. Original language with subtitles is standard, occasionally German dubbing for German films.

The exact screening dates, film titles, and times will appear in the online calendar about a week in advance. Days without screenings will be announced in case of bad weather — tickets will be valid for the rescheduled date.
