Open-air cinema at the Hainbadestelle Mühlwörth in Bamberg
When the evenings get long in Bamberg in July, the Hainbadestelle Mühlwörth transforms into an open-air cinema. The Fränkischer Kinosommer screens a film every evening for three weeks – the mix of summer blockbusters, German cinema, arthouse hits, and special screenings has become a firm fixture in Bamberg's summer calendar over the years. The festival also runs concurrently in several other Franconian cities under the same brand.
The Hainbadestelle is located in the Bamberger Hain, directly on the water of the Regnitz river. The park borders the UNESCO World Heritage old town of Bamberg – those who arrive early can experience the sunset over the river before the film starts. Seating is set up fresh daily, with free choice of seats and no reservations possible.
Admission is at 8:00 PM, with the film starting at dusk (around 9:30 PM to 10:15 PM in early July). Before the film, there's the warm-up by Radio Bamberg with music, commentary, and small activities. Drinks and snacks are available on-site – outside food and drinks are not permitted.
The venue is accessible. Traveling by public transport is the easiest option: Bus line 909, stop Sodenstraße. On-site parking is very limited; the walk from Bamberg station is well-signified and takes 10-15 minutes.
Bamberg is located in the Upper Franconia district of the state of Bavaria and its old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. The open-air cinema combines its cultural appeal with the summer feeling by the water – a combination that remains unique in the program of many Franconian open-air cinemas.
The 2026 program will be published on the official website in the weeks leading up to the festival. As in previous years, the program mixes current blockbusters, German cinema, selected arthouse films, and special screenings. Before each film, there's the warm-up by Radio Bamberg with music and commentary. Tickets are available in advance and at the box office; seat reservations are not possible.
The complete 2026 program will be published in the weeks before the festival starts at fraenkischer-kinosommer.de. A mix of current films, German cinema highlights, and selected arthouse titles.
