Open German Championship Wingfoil at Südstrand
On the Pentecost weekend, the Südstrand of Fehmarn island in the Ostholstein district of Schleswig-Holstein becomes the main stage for the European foil scene. The Foil Festival Fehmarn is not just an event — it's a beach fair, the German championship, a beginner's school, and a family holiday all rolled into one. The festival is organized by Freiluft GmbH, which combines wingfoiling with a trade fair concept and North German beach culture.
The event grounds behind the FehMare are divided into four areas:
The highlight is the German Championship in Wingfoil Freestyle, sanctioned by the German Wing Foil Association — simultaneously a qualification for the European and World Championships. In addition, there's the Winger of the Sea One Hour Edition: a lap race around two buoys about one kilometer apart for 60 minutes, focusing on endurance and tactics. Competitions run daily from 10 AM to 6 PM, weather permitting.
The festival isn't just about top-level sport. Crash courses teach the basics of wingfoiling in just a few hours, supplemented by advanced and beginner courses, as well as express courses for watersports enthusiasts with prior experience. The beach café atmosphere, the on-site beach camp, and the pump-foil playground during calm periods make the Foil Festival attractive for companions and children too. Entry to the Expo is free.
With its timing on the Pentecost weekend, the Foil Festival traditionally opens the season on the Baltic Sea. Pros, hobby foilers, and brand representatives from all over Europe meet here — before the tour continues to Sylt, Rügen, and the Mediterranean coast.
From May 22 to 25, 2026, the Foil Festival will open its gates on the event grounds behind the FehMare (Zur Strandpromenade 4, 23769 Fehmarn). Nestled within the Pentecost weekend, the festival traditionally kicks off the European foil season.
The 2026 edition features 43 exhibiting brands (a world record for a Wingfoil beach fair), the Open German Championship Wingfoil Freestyle as a qualification for the European and World Championships, the Winger of the Sea One Hour Edition lap race, and an expanded Calm Zone Playground with a skateboard miniramp, pumpfoil ramps, and a cross course for OneWheel and Surron e-motorcycles.
Competition Sanctioning: German Wing Foil Association (Qualification for European and World Championships).
Fehmarn is directly accessible via the Fehmarnsund Bridge (A1, Vogelfluglinie). By train: Burg auf Fehmarn station, then bus to Südstrand. Parking: Beach parking lots at Südstrand (fee required).
