Advent Atmosphere in the Erzgebirge Foothills

As the days grow shorter and the first snowflakes fall, the market square of the town of Flöha transforms into a small but charming Christmas market – the Flöha Advent Magic. Unlike the very large Saxon Christmas markets (Dresden Striezelmarkt, Chemnitz Christmas Market), the Advent Magic's charm lies precisely in its manageable size: everyone knows each other here, the stalls are run by local clubs and vendors, and the atmosphere is familial rather than touristy.

The Advent Magic on the Market Square

For two days on the first Advent weekend, the stalls on Flöha's market square open: mulled wine and punch, regional specialties such as Saxon bratwurst, Stollen, Pulsnitz gingerbread, Erzgebirge smokers, along with regional arts and crafts – Schwibbogen candle arches, nutcrackers, Christmas pyramids, carved angels, and miner figures. A warming fire in the market square invites you to linger. Choirs, the town band, and occasionally local bands perform on the stage – mostly with a classic Advent program.

The Living Advent Calendar – 24 Days of Encounter

A special feature of Flöha: The Living Advent Calendar accompanies the Advent season from December 1st to 24th, 2026. Every day at 5:00 PM, a different location in the town opens its doors – a residential house, a shop, a church, a club room – for a short, atmospheric Advent prelude: a song, a poem, a punch, sometimes a conversation, a cookie. The calendar program will be published in November in the local press and on the town's website. It is a beautiful tradition that carries the social life of the town through the Advent season.

Flöha – Smallest Erzgebirge Town with a Great Industrial History

The town of Flöha, with around 11,000 inhabitants, is located in the Mittelsachsen district, where the Flöha River flows into the Zschopau. The town is known for its industrial history: the Alte Baumwolle (Old Cotton Mill) – a former cotton spinning mill from the 19th century – has now been renovated and houses event spaces and apartments. Flöha is easily accessible by S-Bahn from Chemnitz (approx. 15 minutes) and is an ideal starting point for hikes in the central Erzgebirge foothills.
