About Fireworks Competition Hannover – Norway

The International Fireworks Competition Hannover is one of the most important pyromusical competitions in Europe. On five summer evenings between May and September, the Großer Garten Herrenhausen transforms into an open-air stage for choreographed light art. On the second competition evening, Team Norway competes, interpreting this year's motto Dance of Northern Lights with an approximately 25-minute composition of music, light, and pyrotechnics. The baroque garden parterre, the illuminated hedges, and the world-famous water features provide the backdrop for a unique summer event that attracts around 10,000 visitors per evening to the UNESCO World Heritage Park annually.

Top-Class Pyromusical in the Herrenhäuser Gärten

Since 1990, the world's best pyrotechnicians have competed at the International Fireworks Competition Hannover. Five nations compete annually with choreographed fireworks compositions set to specially selected music. An international expert jury and the audience evaluate synchronicity, visual ideas, color dramaturgy, and originality. The 34th edition is under the motto Dance of Northern Lights, illuminating the fascination of the Northern Lights, whose dancing light displays are interpreted in their own unique way by the participating teams from Norway, Finland, Scotland, and Sweden.

The Second Evening – Team Norway

On May 30, 2026, Team Norway opens the Nordic series. Scandinavian pyrotechnic tradition traditionally focuses on white and blue color effects, cool visual ideas, and elegant lines. The selected composition combines modern Nordic soundscapes with classical motifs, transposing the Aurora Borealis into an approximately 25-minute musical choreography over the Herrenhäuser Gärten.

The Supporting Program

The gates of the Großer Garten open in the afternoon. Visitors can experience the baroque park in daylight, stroll along the Great Fountain, visit the Grotto and the Garden Theatre, or stop by one of the gastronomic stands. A supporting program of comedy, acrobatics, and music on the show stage near the Garden Theatre fills the hours until sunset. As dusk falls, the actual pyromusical begins, broadcast via an audio system around the garden parterre.

World Heritage Site as a Stage

The Herrenhäuser Gärten have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014. The baroque Großer Garten, with its strictly geometric layout, the Great Basin, and the nearly 80-meter-high Great Fountain, offers a unique backdrop that shapes no other fireworks competition in the world in this way. The historic sightlines, the hedged compartments, and the nocturnal park lighting merge with the pyrotechnic effects to create an overall production that goes far beyond a classic fireworks display.

Fireworks Competition Hannover – Norway — edition 2026

The second of five competition evenings of the 34th International Fireworks Competition Hannover is dedicated to Norway. Under the motto Dance of Northern Lights, the Norwegian team brings a pyromusical choreography to the Großer Garten Herrenhausen that captures the mystical fascination of the Northern Lights. The competition evening combines with a multi-hour pre-show of performances, gastronomy, and park illumination to create an overall experience that annually draws thousands of pyrotechnics and garden enthusiasts to the capital of Lower Saxony.

The second competition evening of the 2026 season is a home game for the Nordic pyrotechnic school. The selected Norwegian team is one of the established players on the European competition scene and has caused a stir in recent years with precise synchronicity and unusual color combinations.

The pyromusical lasts approximately 25 minutes and is precisely synchronized to a specially compiled soundtrack, audible throughout the audience area of the Großer Garten via a professional sound system. The evaluation by the expert jury and the audience contributes to the overall ranking of the season, with the winner crowned on the final evening in mid-September.
