Advent market of the Finthen associations on the 1st Advent weekend in Mainz-West
Mainz-Finthen, with its approximately 14,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest districts of Mainz, located high in the west of the city on the Lerchenberg plateau. Characterized by a long rural tradition, the historic town center around St. Martin's parish church, and a distinct landscape of associations, Finthen has retained its village character despite its size. The Finthen Christmas Market on the first Advent weekend is an expression of this tradition: an association-run market that is entirely dedicated to the neighborhood, volunteer work, and the promotion of local association activities.
Wooden stalls, decorated fir trees, and fairy lights line the area around St. Martin's parish church and along Finthen's central streets. The catering is in the hands of the Finthen associations: sports clubs, the fire department, parishes, the carnival club, music associations, and schools share the stalls. Mulled wine, homemade soups, potato pancakes, bratwurst, crêpes, Kreppel (a type of doughnut), and coffee with homemade cakes provide sustenance for visitors. Stalls offering Advent decorations, handicrafts, honey, knitwear, nativity figures, and small gifts from Finthen and Rheinhessen complete the offerings.
A diverse program unfolds on a stage in the center of the market. The men's choir, the brass choir of the Protestant parish, the children's choirs of the primary schools, and the music associations provide atmospheric performances throughout the afternoon. The highlight for families is the visit from St. Nicholas on Saturday, who distributes gifts to the children. On Sunday, brass ensembles, nativity plays, and communal Advent singing shape the mood.
The proceeds from the market go towards youth and association work in Finthen. Visitors often combine their visit to the market with a stroll through the old town center and a look at St. Martin's parish church, one of Mainz's oldest sacred buildings. The Finthen Christmas Market is a reliable start to the Advent season in Mainz-West and a meeting point for everyone who appreciates the community-driven charm of a Rheinhessen district Advent market.
The 2026 program follows the proven structure of an association-run Advent market. Saturday starts in the late afternoon with the opening and the first mulled wine service, followed by performances by children's choirs and the visit of St. Nicholas. In the evening, live music and mulled wine service will create a relaxed atmosphere. Sunday begins with lunch catering, with brass choirs, brass ensembles, and communal Advent singing at the center. The market concludes in the early evening.
