Street music festival in Weinheim's city centre, inspired by the French model
The Fête de la Musique was invented in 1982 by the French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang — as a nationwide free music festival on the day of the summer solstice (June 21). The French original has become a global movement: Today, over 1,000 cities in 120+ countries celebrate the Fête de la Musique. The basic principle: Music for everyone — everywhere, free of charge and without barriers. First celebrated in Germany in 1985 in Berlin, Weinheim is now one of the cities with its own established Fête de la Musique tradition.
The unusual concept of the Fête de la Musique: There is no central main stage. Instead, the entire city centre transforms into an open stage landscape. In Weinheim, these are the squares, streets, and courtyards of the historic centre: Dürreplatz near the castle, Hauptstraße as the main thoroughfare, Windeckplatz with its own choir stage, the Burgenpassage, the central Marktplatz, the smaller Hutplatz, the two Schlosshöfe (at the Old Castle / Weinheim Castle), and the winding Gerberbachviertel with its half-timbered houses.
Characteristic of the Fête de la Musique: Musicians can perform without formal registration. Amateurs, professionals, school and club choirs, youth bands, singer-songwriters, DJs, street musicians — everyone who wants to contribute to the music is welcome. The City of Weinheim keeps the squares and streets clear, coordinates rough stage setups, and ensures the necessary permits. The result: a dense, diverse musical scene that opens up new sound worlds with every stroll from one square to another.
A special stage on Windeckplatz is dedicated to choirs: School, club, church, and private choirs from Weinheim and the Bergstraße region present themselves here. A cappella ensembles, mixed choirs, male choirs, female choirs, youth choirs — an important part of Weinheim's music scene.
Weinheim is a city of around 46,000 inhabitants in the Rhein-Neckar district (state of Baden-Württemberg, district 08226), located on the Bergstraße between Heidelberg and Darmstadt. The historic old town with its half-timbered buildings, the striking Weinheim Castle, and the landmark Windeck Castle form the picturesque backdrop for the Fête de la Musique. Weinheim benefits from its southern location on the Bergstraße — the summer brings Mediterranean warm days and evenings that perfectly embrace the French festival format.
On Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 4 PM to 9:30 PM, the City of Weinheim will transform its city centre into an open stage landscape inspired by the French model. On about a dozen squares, streets, and courtyards of the historic centre, musicians will perform — amateurs and professionals, bands, soloists, choirs, DJs. The concept follows the original principle of the Paris Fête de la Musique: Music for everyone, everywhere, free of charge, and without barriers.
Those who wish to participate as musicians can usually perform without formal registration — the City of Weinheim coordinates the stages and locations and provides the necessary infrastructure (electricity, seating).
