Open-air music day around Mierendorffplatz in Charlottenburg-Nord – certified as a Greener Fête location in 2026
The Mierendorff-INSEL is a real island: completely surrounded by the Spree and the Berlin-Spandau Ship Canal, located in the Charlottenburg-Nord district, with its own subway station (U7 Mierendorffplatz). Around 13,000 people live here in close proximity, in the dynamic between Wilhelminian-era buildings, industrial facilities by the water, and active neighborhood life. The Fête de la Musique has been one of the fixed highlights of the island's calendar for years.
The island's central square transforms into an extended summer evening on June 21st with several consecutive acts. The programming style of recent years shows a deliberate mix: Folk-Pop with cello and Chapman Stick, Flamenco duos, Folk-Rock bands from the neighborhood, Latin-Tango-Blues crossover, and finally DJ sets with Goa Trance and World Beats. The stage is small, the distance between band and audience minimal – that's the charm of the format.
In 2026, the Mierendorff-INSEL is among the selected 'Greener Fête locations'. The Berlin-wide sustainability program of the Fête de la Musique commits participating locations to waste prevention, reusable tableware, local supply chains, and a reduced ecological footprint. At Mierendorffplatz, this means: no disposable plastic cups, regional drinks, and a jointly cleaned-up square the next morning. Visitors are expressly encouraged to participate in this practice.
Charlottenburg-Nord is one of the smallest districts in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, geographically dominated by the Mierendorff-INSEL. Unlike the tourist-heavy parts of Charlottenburg (Kurfürstendamm, Charlottenburg Palace), the island is a residential neighborhood with a strong sense of community identity. The Fête de la Musique functions here less as a pure music festival and more as an annual neighborhood festival where associations, initiatives, and residents can make themselves visible.
The Fête de la Musique takes place every year on June 21st – the day of the summer solstice. In Berlin (both a state and a city), the festival has been held in over 100 districts simultaneously since 1995. The Mierendorff-INSEL is one of the locations that continuously cultivates the format and gives it its own profile.
Six hours of live music at Mierendorffplatz – following the proven island program: Folk-Pop, Flamenco, Soul, Folk-Rock, Latin, and a concluding DJ set. Between acts, initiatives, associations, and the neighborhood office provide information on current neighborhood topics. Picnic blankets, short walk to the subway, summer solstice atmosphere until 10 PM.
The 'Greener Fête location' status for 2026 obliges all participants to use reusable systems, regional catering, and joint waste prevention. The Mierendorff-INSEL thus focuses on sustainable neighborhood culture and programmatically continues its contribution to the Berlin-wide festival day.
Detailed lineup will be communicated shortly before the event via mierendorffinsel.org and fetedelamusique.de.
