Spring Festival of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival on the island of Rügen
The Festspielfrühling Rügen is the spring season of the renowned Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. While the large summer festival runs from June to September throughout the state, the Festspielfrühling focuses on about ten days in March and the Baltic Sea island of Rügen in the Vorpommern-Rügen district. The focus is on chamber music – performed by top international musicians in locations that are themselves part of the experience.
The festival uses the island as its stage. The central venue is the neoclassical Marstall in Putbus, the former white residence town of Prince Malte zu Putbus. Further concerts take place in churches, manor houses, and prominent locations on the island – including the Granitz Hunting Lodge high above the Baltic Sea and the Sellin Pier. This combination of architecture, landscape, and music is what makes the Festspielfrühling so special.
A special feature of the Festspielfrühling is the rotating artistic direction: year after year, an outstanding artistic personality shapes the program and curates their own ensembles and program ideas. In 2026, British violist Timothy Ridout will take on this role – a prize winner of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, who will be featured in various ensembles throughout the festival.
With around 21 concerts within ten days, the Festspielfrühling is a dense festival – designed for music lovers seeking a concentrated chamber music stay on the Baltic Sea. The program combines established repertoire with discoveries, readings, and cross-genre formats.
Putbus, located in the south of Rügen, is one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's architectural gems with its neoclassical town layout and palace park. The Festspielfrühling makes the town and the entire island a meeting point for the chamber music scene in spring – long before the summer season on Rügen begins.
The 2026 edition of Festspielfrühling Rügen runs from March 13 to 22 and offers around 21 concerts at venues spread across the island.
The artistic direction in 2026 is by violist Timothy Ridout, a prize winner of the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He curates the program and will also be featured in several ensembles himself. The festival opens in the Marstall Putbus; the program combines classical chamber music with cross-genre formats such as the musical-literary production »Im Labyrinth der Liebe« (In the Labyrinth of Love), a fusion of music and readings.
From March 13 to 22, 2026, approximately 21 concerts will take place. The artistic director is violist Timothy Ridout.
