Culture under the open sky — free and accessible

The Festival aufm Platz is a unique cultural format that the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung realizes together with the VGH-Stiftung in several Lower Saxony towns. The idea behind it: to bring top-class culture directly to the people, without admission barriers, without advance registration, without fixed seating. Those who pass by stop and listen – or settle into a deckchair provided on site.

2026 Program: Through the Air

The 2026 tour is themed "Through the Air — The Cardinal Directions." It travels across Lower Saxony between June 4th and 27th, 2026. The program is dedicated to pioneers of aviation and celestial exploration. The focus is on the life story of the American pilot Amelia Earhart, who was the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo and disappeared with her plane a decade before Lindbergh's Pacific crossing.

Star Guests in Uslar

On June 20th, 2026, the Festival aufm Platz will be held on the square in front of the Old Town Hall Uslar. Actress Nina Gummich will read from texts about and by Amelia Earhart – accompanied musically by trumpeter Simon Höfele, one of the most sought-after young soloists of his generation, and pianist Annika Treutler, who regularly performs on Europe's major concert stages. The performance begins at 6 PM.

A Format with Low Barriers

What makes the "aufm Platz" format so appealing is its radical accessibility. Classical concerts or readings usually take place in concert halls, theaters, or bookstores – places that can be associated with certain inhibitions for many people. By using public urban spaces, the festival reaches audiences who might not otherwise find their way into a concert hall.
