Traditional May festival at the historic Sauerbrunnen in Longuich on the Moselle on May 1st, 2026
The Fest auf dem Sauerbrunnen in Longuich is one of the established traditions on May 1st in the region between Trier and Schweich. It takes place every year on May Day on the grounds of the historic Sauerbrunnen, a spring rich in iron minerals that has been part of Longuich's landscape for centuries. In the past, the spring water was used as a healing spring; today, the spring area is a well-maintained recreational spot on the outskirts of the village.
The organizer is the municipality of Longuich, supported by numerous local clubs and associations, which contribute to the festival with stands, culinary offerings, and musical performances. The program typically includes Moselle wine service, regional dishes such as bratwurst and tarte flambée, coffee and cake, live music, and a program for children and families. The rural, cozy atmosphere and the wide view over the Moselle and into the Trittenheim and Mehring wine regions make the festival particularly attractive for day-trippers.
Longuich itself – located in the Trier-Saarburg district, on a distinctive loop of the Moselle – is a traditional wine-growing town and, thanks to its Roman buildings (“Villa Urbana” Longuich, a reconstructed Roman villa complex), also a historically significant place. The Sauerbrunnen is another mosaic piece of local history, continuing a long tradition of Roman and medieval spring culture on the Moselle.
The festival on May 1st is family-friendly, and admission is free; only food and drinks are paid for. For hikers and cyclists on the Moselle Cycle Path, the Sauerbrunnen is a convenient and beautiful stop – the festival offers the ideal occasion to linger.
The 2026 edition continues the proven May Day format.
In good weather, strong attendance is expected along the Moselle – early arrival is recommended.
