Rosenmontag 2026 in Speyer — SKG Children's Carnival in the Stadthalle and street carnival/parties, main parades of the district in Waldsee and Mechtersheim
Speyer is not a carnival stronghold in the Rhineland sense — unlike Cologne, Mainz, or Düsseldorf, there is no major Rosenmontag parade here that attracts several hundred thousand visitors with themed floats and a festival committee. Speyer's Fastnacht is part of the southwestern German Fastnacht culture, which sets different accents: smaller, more intimate, more focused on Palatinate customs, dialect stage speeches (Büttenreden), and local club structures.
Rosenmontag 2026 falls on February 16th. In Speyer, various activities characterize the day — no central grand parade, but decentralized events. The SKG-Kinderfasching in the Stadthalle is the most prominent event: at 2:33 PM (the typical carnival time designation), the event of the Speyer Carnival Society for children and families begins. Street carnival and parties in restaurants, pubs, and public places complete the picture.
Those who want to experience a classic Fastnacht parade should head to the neighboring municipalities on Faschingsdienstag (February 17th, 2026). In Waldsee (Rhein-Pfalz district), the parade starts at 1:33 PM — one of the largest parades in the region. In Mechtersheim (municipality of Römerberg, Rhein-Pfalz district), the parade begins at 2:11 PM. These parades are classic Vorderpfalz (Rhenish Palatinate) Fastnacht parades with floats, walking groups, music bands, and costumed groups.
The southwestern German Fastnacht — to which Speyer's belongs — has its own characteristics. Dialect stage speeches in Palatinate dialect (instead of Rhineland Kölsch or Mainz accent), dance groups like Tanzmariechen and Funkenmariechen, club structures with a prince and princess couple (Prinzenpaar) and an eleven-member council (Elferrat), and a strong emphasis on social gatherings in clubs and inns. Speyer's Fastnacht — with its eight main sessions between January 24th and February 15th, 2026 (see separate sheet "Fastnacht Speyer — Prunksitzungen") — is part of this tradition.
Ash Wednesday 2026 falls on February 18th. As everywhere in Catholic Central Europe, it marks the end of the Fastnacht season and the beginning of Lent, which lasts until Easter (April 5th, 2026). Ash Wednesday fish dishes — a Palatinate-Rhineland tradition — are offered in many Speyer restaurants.
Speyer is not a carnival stronghold in the Rhineland sense. Speyer's Fastnacht is primarily expressed through ballroom events (see separate sheet "Fastnacht Speyer — Prunksitzungen"). On Rosenmontag itself, activities are decentralized.
The detailed program for Rosenmontag activities in Speyer will be communicated by the clubs in advance.
Street carnival is free. Ballroom events require admission.
