Night of Industrial Culture in the Ruhr Area — Oberhausen Venues 2026: Gasometer and Theater Oberhausen, Saturday, June 27, 2026
When the entire Ruhr Area lights up at the same time on a Saturday in June, the ExtraSchicht has begun. Since 2001, it has been the Night of Industrial Culture: a unique festival where former mines, coking plants, water towers, blast furnaces, and steelworks come alive in a single night. On Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 6 PM to 2 AM, 40 venues in 18 cities transform into stages for music, light art, performances, industrial history, and gastronomy. You only need one ticket — public transport throughout the VRR is included during the night.
Oberhausen is home to Ruhr Tourismus GmbH (the organizer) and has been part of ExtraSchicht since its inception. In 2026, Oberhausen will feature two venues:
What makes ExtraSchicht so unique: a single ticket grants you access to all 40 venues between Hamm in the east and Moers in the west. Bus lines (shuttles) and regional trains run at frequent intervals, and regular public transport is part of the ticket. You plan your own route: from the Gasometer to the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein Coal Mine in Essen, then to the Maschinenhalle Zweckel in Gladbeck, perhaps to Bochum to the former mine. Each venue offers its own, almost always free, program on-site.
For 2026, the jury has selected four new venues and brought back seven former regulars:
The Ruhr Area has lost its heavy industry — and instead preserved industrial monuments unique worldwide. The Route of Industrial Heritage connects 27 anchor points (Gasometer, Zollverein, Henrichshütte, Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord), and ExtraSchicht is its biggest celebration. Those who know Oberhausen can see the Gasometer from afar — on the ExtraSchicht night, the entire steel structure is bathed in color, a soundscape lies beneath the steel beams, and from the viewing platform at a height of 117 meters, you can see the lights of the other 39 venues sparkling.
ExtraSchicht is family-friendly: Children under 6 years old are free, many venues offer explicit children's programs until 10 PM. Afterwards, the adult audience takes over, with many venues operating until 2 AM. The last shuttles depart around 2:30 AM.
Festival night throughout the Ruhr Area. Oberhausen venues 2026: Gasometer Oberhausen (light installation, program at the 117m steel structure) and Theater Oberhausen (new venue, performances, concerts, readings in the foyer).

Start in one city, then specifically combine 2–3 others — seeing everything in one night is impossible. The program guide (Tour Guide) will be published in Spring 2026 and will be available at advance booking offices. For the Gasometer, early arrival is recommended (queue for the viewing platform); Theater Oberhausen is ideal for later in the evening.
