About Explore Science

Explore Science transforms Bremen's Burgerpark into a giant open-air science laboratory every September. At around 25 interactive stations, in twelve workshops, and on stage, you can experience science hands-on – free of charge and in the middle of nature. The festival is aimed at kindergarten and school children, families, and anyone interested in science, and is organized by the Klaus Tschira Foundation. Each year has its own theme, highlighted through workshops, competitions, and stage shows. The festival is set within Bremen's Burgerpark, one of Germany's largest and most beautiful city parks.

Hands-on Science in Burgerpark

Explore Science is one of the largest science festivals for children and families in Germany. For three days in September, the Klaus Tschira Foundation transforms Bremen's Burgerpark around the Markusbrunnen into an open-air laboratory. Unlike traditional lecture series, this event focuses on direct experimentation: trying things out, building, puzzling, comparing, and observing.

Stations, Workshops, and Competitions

Every year, you'll find around 25 interactive stations on the festival grounds where you can explore phenomena from mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology (STEM) yourself. Twelve workshops and over 40 hands-on slots delve deeper into individual topics with experts. In addition, there are competitions where around 280 participants compete in teams – with tasks that change depending on the theme.

Stage and Shows

The central stage features a mix of science shows, talks, and interactive programs. The range includes chemical experiments with live reactions, physics demonstrations, mathematics tricks, and robotics demonstrations. For Thursday and Friday, parts of the stage program will be translated into sign language.

Commitment of the Klaus Tschira Foundation

The event is organized by the Klaus Tschira Foundation, one of the largest private science foundations in Europe. It has been organizing Explore Science in Bremen since 2018 – in addition to locations in Mannheim and elsewhere. The festival is free, making it an accessible event for families of all income levels.

Set in Bremen's Burgerpark

The Burgerpark is one of the largest and most beautiful city parks in Germany. Started in 1866 and financed by citizens' donations, it is still privately maintained and freely accessible today. With its meadows, old trees, ponds, and cafes, it provides the ideal backdrop for a festival that combines science and nature.

Explore Science — edition 2026

The eighth edition of Explore Science Bremen will take place from September 10-12, 2026, in Burgerpark. The theme is: Inventions and Discoveries. It will feature around 25 interactive stations, twelve workshops, over 40 hands-on slots, and competitions with about 280 participants.

The eighth edition of Explore Science Bremen will take place from September 10-12, 2026, in Bremen's Bürgerpark around the Markusbrunnen. Three competitions will be the focus in 2026: Cosmic Vacuum Cleaner, Solar Sail, and Future Rocket – tasks related to space travel and the spirit of discovery. The central stage will feature a mix of exciting science and hands-on shows with a science-themed children's theater; on Thursday, September 10, and Friday, September 11, a portion of the stage program will be accompanied by sign language interpreters.
