Secular Harvest Festival Tradition

The Erntefest Westervesede looks back on a secular tradition. The Westervesede Marksmen's Association has been preserving this custom for generations and maintains close contact with neighbouring clubs in Brockel, Wensebrock, and Wohlsdorf. This established club culture is an expression of the village identity of the Samtgemeinde Bothel.

Harvest Crown and Procession

At the heart of the festival is the harvest crown — woven from the fruits of this year's harvest. It is carried through the Westervesede locality in a solemn procession. Farmer families, rural women's associations, marksmen, and children accompany the parade. Decorated houses, straw figures, and harvest offerings along the roadside characterise the scene.

Harvest Thanksgiving Service

The service gives thanks for the harvest and provides a spiritual framework for the festival. The pastor of the responsible parish leads the celebration, which is open to all denominations.

Marksmen's Festival Elements

Following the spiritual part, marksmen's festival elements ensue: King's shoot, crowning of the new monarchs, dance evening in the festival tent with live music. The festival combines the character of Harvest Thanksgiving with marksmen's tradition and a folk festival atmosphere.

Meeting Point for Westervesede Residents

The Erntefest is the social highlight of Westervesede's annual programme and a meeting point for the entire village community. Former Westervesede residents return for the festival, families celebrate together, and friendly clubs from Wensebrock and Wohlsdorf are guests.
