Over 120 exhibitors along a kilometer of historic town center — Mayor's keg tapping ceremony at Hof Gehling, Sunday, October 18, 2026
The Ernte- und Bauernmarkt Hochlar is a true institution of the Recklinghausen autumn — and one of the largest farmers' markets in the northern Ruhr area. For over three decades, the historic center of Alt-Hochlar has transformed once a year into a kilometer-long market with over 120 exhibitors. Organizers: the Werbegemeinschaft Hochlar in cooperation with the City of Recklinghausen. The next edition will take place on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The focus is on fresh seasonal produce directly from the field: apples, pears, pumpkins, potatoes, beets, leeks, cabbage, carrots, savoy cabbage, celery. Farm shops from the Münsterland, the Borkener Schwarzbeere, and the Vest bring their harvest directly to Hochlar.
Jams, chutneys, juices, liqueurs from traditional production. Sausages and ham from regional butchers. Honey from beekeepers in the Ruhr area. Baked goods — Pumpernickel, Westphalian dark bread, farm baker cakes.
Several stalls present regional crafts: leather goods (belts, bags, shoes), jewelry (silver, bronze, semi-precious stones), ceramics (pottery, tableware, decoration), basket weaving, brush and broom manufacturing, floristry with autumn bouquets and wreaths.
Food trucks and stalls serve seasonal culinary delights: Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Pulled Pork, potato soup, Pannas (a type of pancake), crêpes, apple strudel, plum cake, Glühwein (mulled wine), and Federweißer (young wine).
Traditional opening: The Mayor of the City of Recklinghausen opens the market with a keg tapping ceremony at Hof Gehling — a historic farmstead on Suitbertplatz. This ritual turns the market into a locally anchored neighborhood festival: politicians and associations together with the citizens.
Hochlar is a northern district of Recklinghausen with a village character — agricultural tradition, small farms, lots of green space, its own parish (St. Suitbert). The market utilizes this rural identity — unlike the large markets in city centers, the authentic village atmosphere is programmatically emphasized here.
Recklinghausen is the district capital of the Kreis Recklinghausen — the former Vest region at the transition from the Ruhr area to the Münsterland. With around 110,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in the northern Ruhr area. Known for the Ruhrfestspiele (theater festival), the Festspielhaus, and an active neighborhood culture.
The 2026 edition takes place on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
