Opening of the special exhibition at Germany's only comic museum
The Erika-Fuchs-Haus in Schwarzenbach an der Saale is Germany's only comic museum and also houses the estate of Erika Fuchs (1906–2005). The translator of Mickey Mouse stories shaped the German-language Disney tradition with her language experiments – onomatopoeia like klabang!, dense allusions to German classics, the famous “Erikativ” –. The museum is dedicated to comics as an independent art form and regularly hosts special exhibitions that combine comics, language art, and social issues.
The special exhibition “HIRNCOMIC – What’s Going On in the Brain?” approaches the complex topic of the brain and neuroscience through the visual language of comics. With large-format panels, interactive stations, and original illustrations, knowledge about perception, memory, sleep, emotions, and neurological diseases is conveyed. Comic artists translate scientific findings into panels that are both accessible and professionally sound.
Schwarzenbach an der Saale is located in the Hof district in Upper Franconia and has become a small “comic town” beyond its status as Erika Fuchs's birthplace. The Erika-Fuchs-Haus was opened in 2015 in a former savings bank building and has since been an attraction for comic fans, school classes, and language enthusiasts from all over Germany.
The vernissage on May 8, 2026, marks the start of the new special exhibition at the Erika-Fuchs-Haus. “HIRNCOMIC” explores complex neurological and psychological questions through comic pages and interactive stations: What happens when dreaming, remembering, falling in love? How does the brain change throughout life?
The Erika-Fuchs-Haus places the special exhibition in the broader context of its collection mandate: comics as a form of knowledge and communication, in the tradition of Erika Fuchs, who, with her translations, confidently bridged the gap between high culture and popular culture.
The exact program for the vernissage will be announced by the Erika-Fuchs-Haus on erika-fuchs.de/veranstaltungen. Expected:
Train: Schwarzenbach (Saale) station on the Hof–Bamberg line, a few minutes' walk to Bahnhofstraße from there. Car: A9, exit Naila/Selbitz or Münchberg.
The opening reception is usually free. For subsequent visits to the special exhibition, regular museum admission applies.
