Grand Carnival Parade on Tulpensonntag in Emmerich am Rhein – Starts 11:11 AM at Geistmarkt, the day before KiKa Parade in the Elten district
Emmerich am Rhein is located directly on the Dutch border, in the Kleve district, and belongs to the Lower Rhine region. Carnival tradition here is independent – influenced by Dutch Carnaval culture, yet firmly rooted in Rhenish carnival. The Emmericher Karnevals-Verein (EKV) has carried this tradition for decades and organizes the Tulpensonntagszug as the central event of the carnival season.
The Emmerich Tulpensonntagszug 2026 starts on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 11:11 AM at Geistmarkt in the center of Emmerich. Afterwards, an accompanying Carnival Fair runs until 4:00 PM in the city center.
Already on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 2:11 PM, the traditional Children's Carnival Parade (KiKa) starts in the Elten district. A family-friendly version with walking groups and small floats.
The organizer is the Emmericher Karnevals-Verein (EKV), based at Hohen Weg 28 in Emmerich am Rhein. President is Annette Arntzen. The EKV organizes several events throughout the season – the Prince Proclamation in November, GECKer Abend, Ladies' Sessions, KiKa Parade, Tulpensonntagszug, and Hall Carnival.
"Tulpensonntag" is the Lower Rhine term for Carnival Sunday (the day before Rosenmontag). The name has its roots in Dutch Carnaval, where the tulip is understood as a symbol of joy and celebration. While in Cologne the main parade takes place on Rosenmontag, on the Lower Rhine the focus is often on Sunday – as it is in Emmerich.
Emmerich is a city with around 31,000 inhabitants in the Kleve district, directly on the Dutch border. The city is located on the Lower Rhine, where the Rhine flows from Germany into the Netherlands. Known primarily for the Emmerich Rhine Bridge (one of the longest suspension bridges in Europe), the harbor, and carnival. The Tulpensonntagszug is one of the most important city festivals of the year.
The 2026 carnival days in Emmerich include the KiKa Parade on Saturday and the Tulpensonntagszug on Carnival Sunday. The organizer is, as always, the Emmericher Karnevals-Verein (EKV).
Carnival parades and fair are free to attend. Hall events have an admission fee (tickets via EKV).
By train: RE10 (Niederrhein-Express) Düsseldorf–Emmerich, Emmerich station is right in the city center, about a 10-minute walk to Geistmarkt. By car via the A3 (Emmerich exit) or the B8 from the south.
Due to road closures, park-and-walk parking lots on the outskirts are recommended. Parking garages at Steinstraße and Rhein-Center.
Tulpensonntagszug is free to attend. Hall events are ticketed (tickets via EKV).
Food and drink vendors along the parade route and at Geistmarkt are open. Snack stands at various locations. Toilets at key points. Carnival fair with carousels in the city center after the parade.
Arrive at Geistmarkt on Sunday morning well before the start – spots along the route fill up quickly. If coming with children: Saturday's KiKa Parade in Elten is the family-friendly alternative. Those who want to experience Lower Rhine carnival should compare it to Cologne or Düsseldorf – smaller, quieter, closer to the Dutch tradition.
