Eisenach — City of Luther and Bach in the Wartburg District

Eisenach in the Wartburg district (Thuringia) is one of the most historically significant cities in Central Germany. Johann Sebastian Bach was born here in 1685, and Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German here on the Wartburg in 1521/22 — both world heritage personalities shape the cityscape to this day. The medieval old town with its market, Luther House, and Bach House forms the backdrop for the annual Christmas market.

Four Weeks of Advent — November 24 to December 22, 2026

The Eisenach Christmas Market runs from November 24 to December 22, 2026 — four full weeks of Advent. The center is the Market Square with its fountain, the baroque St. George's City Church, and the Town Hall. Wooden stalls line the square and extend into the surrounding alleys. The wooden huts are traditionally designed by the Erzgebirgisches Schnitzhaus — the connection to the Saxon woodcarving tradition is a hallmark of the Eisenach market.

Ferris Wheel and Children's Program

One of the most popular attractions is the Ferris wheel — from the top, you have a unique view over the Market Square, the Wartburg panorama, and the medieval old town. The children's program includes a fairy tale street, craft activities, a carousel area, and regular appearances by Santa Claus. Schools and kindergartens from the region perform Advent concerts on the stage.

Culinary Delights and Gifts

Thuringian specialties dominate the culinary offerings: original Thuringian bratwurst from a charcoal grill, mulled wine, Thuringian dumplings, stollen, gingerbread from regional bakeries, and the famous Thuringian Rostbratenwurst. At the gift stalls, visitors will find Erzgebirge wood carvings, Thuringian glass Christmas tree baubles from Lauscha (an hour away), wool clothing, wooden toys, and ceramics.
