Langerwehe — Pottery Village in the Voreifel
The municipality of Langerwehe, with around 14,000 inhabitants in the Düren district, North Rhine-Westphalia, is located at the transition from the Jülich Börde to the Eifel region. It is known as a historic pottery site: since the 14th century, stoneware jugs, pots, and storage vessels have been fired in Langerwehe. The Töpfereimuseum Langerwehe documents this history with a large collection of historical pieces and an active pottery workshop.
Eifelmarkt — Tradition Revived
The Eifelmarkt takes place annually at the Pottery Museum and is modeled after the concept of a classic Voreifel market from the early 20th century: exhibitors in historic market stalls, regional products, live demonstrations, and folk music from the region. Unlike a folklore market, the focus here is on real craft documentation — the Eifel is a region with its own craft traditions (wood, pottery, natural materials, honey, herbs), and the Eifelmarkt visibly brings this tradition together.
Sunday, September 13, 2026 — 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The 2026 Eifelmarkt will take place on Sunday, September 13, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is integrated into the Pottery Museum's event offerings — the museum will be open with extended hours on market day, and guided tours will be offered at fixed times. Regional exhibitors from the Eifel will present their products: pottery from traditional manufactories, honey from Eifel apiaries, regional baked goods (Eifel bread, apple turnovers, crumble cakes), specialties such as Eifel ham, smoked goods, jams, and herb mixes.
Pottery Demonstrations on the Wheel
The highlight of the market is the demonstrations on the potter's wheel: master potters shape jugs, bowls, and small vases before the eyes of the visitors. Children and families can try their hand at shaping a small clay bowl at individual stations. Afterwards, the pieces will be presented at one of the historic kiln stations — even though the actual firing cannot be demonstrated live due to the time involved, the staff will explain the entire process.
Folk Music and Market Atmosphere
Throughout the market, there will be folk music performances by Eifel associations: singing groups, brass choirs, folk music ensembles. The music is acoustic, without a large stage — integrated into the market itself. Food and drink will be available with Eifel specialties, hearty bread, apple wine, cream cake, and coffee.
In the Düren District Calendar
The Eifelmarkt is considered one of the most beautiful small market events in the Düren district — alongside Düren leuchtet, Düren Carnival, and the town festivals in Jülich. Those who want to spend a day in the Voreifel can combine the Eifelmarkt with a hike through the nearby Wehebach valley or a visit to Wehrmeisterei Castle — the concept of a classic Eifel day.
