Autumn market celebrating chestnuts and Palatinate wine on the second weekend of October in Edenkoben's town center
The noble chestnut – affectionately called 'Keschde' in the Palatinate dialect – has been part of the Palatinate cultural landscape for centuries. With extensive chestnut groves along the Haardt ridge between Edenkoben, Sankt Martin, and Maikammer, the region is one of Germany's most important chestnut-growing areas. The Wine and Chestnut Market annually showcases this tradition, making the diversity of the chestnut accessible to a broad audience.
Market stalls offer classic chestnut products: chestnut bread, chestnut flour, chestnut-based pasta, chestnut liqueur and honey, as well as hearty specialties like chestnut sausage and game dishes with chestnut stuffing. Fresh chestnuts are roasted on-site – a typical aroma that fills the town center. Additionally, there are baked goods, jams, and game products from the Pfälzerwald forest.
Alongside the chestnut offerings, winemakers from the Südliche Weinstraße present their current wines. The focus is on Federweißer, which reaches its peak precisely during the market season – combined with the classic onion cake, it's an indispensable part of the Palatinate autumn. Other offerings include Riesling, white and Pinot Noir, Dornfelder, and Rosé from Edenkoben's wineries.
Using Werner-Kastner-Platz and Schafplatz, the market takes over two central squares in Edenkoben's town center. Shops and cafés on the adjacent Hauptstraße are also open, many participating in the weekend's festivities. A small music stage, demonstrations, hands-on activities for children, and arts and crafts round off the offerings.
The second weekend of October is traditionally reserved for the Wine and Chestnut Market in Edenkoben. Setup and opening take place on Saturday morning, and the market runs throughout the day on both days. Experience shows that market weekends with dry autumn weather are very well attended – early arrival and using parking facilities on the outskirts are recommended.
