Ecumenical Midsummer and St. John's Celebration by the Campfire in Chiemgau
The ecumenical Midsummer Bonfire in Ruhpolding combines an old Bavarian tradition with an ecumenical spirit: the Catholic Kolping family Ruhpolding/St. Georg and the Protestant church community jointly invite you to the Midsummer or St. John's celebration. It is celebrated on a meadow opposite the Johanneskirche, which is made available by a Ruhpolding resident for the evening.
When darkness falls, the large wood fire is lit and blessed by the pastors of both denominations. Guests gather around the warming fire for a convivial evening that lasts until midnight. The program includes music, communal singing, and dances by the fire.
The Midsummer Bonfire is less a large folk festival (Volksfest) and more an atmospheric community evening focused on the encounter between people and denominations. The organizers provide food and drinks for the guests' well-being. The proceeds from the evening traditionally go to the Ruhpolding youth fire brigade.
The Ruhpolding Volunteer Fire Brigade is responsible for fire safety and extinguishes the last embers at midnight. This concludes an evening that brings together tradition, faith, and conviviality in the heart of Chiemgau.
