Advent market of the Wirtschafts- und TourismusGemeinschaft on the second weekend of Advent around the St. Michaelis Church
The St. Michaelis Church is the spiritual and architectural heart of Bienenbüttel — a historic brick church that has shaped the townscape for centuries. On the second weekend of Advent, the square around the church transforms into a compact, atmospheric Weihnachtsmarkt, organized by the Wirtschafts- und TourismusGemeinschaft Bienenbüttel (WTG).
What makes the Bienenbüttel market special is its consistent local roots. Instead of interchangeable wholesale goods, visitors will find handcrafted products from the region: candles, wood carvings, knitted and felted wool items, jams, honey, liqueurs, and Christmas baked goods. Local associations complement the offerings with catering stands, the proceeds of which often benefit social projects.
The culinary program includes Glühwein (mulled wine – red, white, and children's punch), hot chocolate, bratwurst, potato pancakes (Reibekuchen), crepes, roasted almonds, gingerbread, and North German specialties such as kale with Pinkel sausage or Heideschnucken sausage. The selection is manageable and focused on quality.
For the youngest visitors, two highlights are particularly important: Santa Claus visits the market on Saturday at 4 PM and distributes small gifts to the children present. A nostalgic children's carousel spins its rounds throughout the weekend, bringing joy to little ones.
The historic backdrop of the St. Michaelis Church, the Christmas lights, the scent of mulled wine and roasted almonds, the murmur of conversation among acquaintances, and the occasional ringing of the church bells — all this creates a contemplative Advent atmosphere that invites you to linger, far from the hustle and bustle of large Christmas markets. Those who visit the Bienenbüttel market once often return year after year.
For many Bienenbüttel residents, the market is not just a shopping opportunity but a meeting place: old acquaintances are greeted, news is exchanged, and mulled wine is enjoyed together. This social function makes the market more than just a sales event — it is part of the village culture.
The dates are confirmed by the Heideregion Uelzen, the Lüneburger Heide platform, and the WTG Bienenbüttel website. The market traditionally takes place on the second weekend of Advent.
Detailed program will be published by WTG Bienenbüttel via the association's website and notices in late autumn.
