Schellbach Celebrates

The small village of Schellbach – one of 15 districts of the municipality of Gutenborn in the south of Burgenlandkreis (Saxony-Anhalt) – hosts its annual village festival on the last or second-to-last weekend of August. In 2026, it will be on August 22 and 23. The event is organized by the local heritage association in cooperation with the municipality of Gutenborn. A festival that thrives entirely on the voluntary commitment of the villagers.

Classic Village Festival Format

Like many village festivals in Saxony-Anhalt, the program follows a proven schedule: Saturday afternoon festival opening, coffee and cake, children's activities, and an evening dance with a DJ or a regional band. Sunday concludes with a morning pint (Frühschoppen) or a family day. Bratwurst, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages from local sources, plus a raffle for the benefit of the heritage association. What makes these festivals special is the atmosphere: everyone knows everyone, everyone helps out, everyone celebrates.

Burgenlandkreis — Land of Many Village Festivals

The Burgenlandkreis in southern Saxony-Anhalt is one of the most traditional regions of the state. Between the Saale, Unstrut, White Elster rivers, and the Saxon state border, old festival customs have been preserved in the many small villages. The municipality of Gutenborn (seat: Bergisdorf), to which Schellbach belongs, is spread across 15 districts with around 1,000 inhabitants – each with its own festival calendar.

A Weekend Duo with Droßdorf

A special feature: On the same August weekend (August 22, 2026), the neighboring village of Droßdorf celebrates its own summer festival. Those who visit both will get an exemplary insight into the course of summer festivals in Saxony-Anhalt.
