Traditional village fair in honour of Saint Donatus in the district of St. Wendel
The Donatus-Kirmes in Gronig, a district of the municipality of Oberthal in the St. Wendel district, is more than just a folk festival. It is the patronal festival of the filial church of St. Donatus, whose patron saint is invoked against storms, hail, and lightning strikes – a classic theme for the agriculturally shaped villages of the Saarland. The Kirmes combines Catholic tradition and village conviviality in a way that is deeply rooted in the Saarland-Hochwald region.
The Kirmes traditionally opens on Friday at 5 p.m. with the setting up of the fairground games and the first morning pint. Kirmes Sunday is the highlight: in the morning, a high mass in honour of Saint Donatus, followed by the Donatus procession through the village, and afterwards the traditional morning pint at the Gasthaus Andler with musical accompaniment by the Trachtenkapelle Gronig. Over the four days, there are fair stalls, bratwurst, Saarschoppen (local wine speciality), and conversations among neighbours.
In Gronig (around 1,000 inhabitants), the entire village supports the Kirmes: the parish community, clubs, the traditional costume band, the Oberthal-Gronig choir, the fire brigade, and the sports club. It is the annual anchor to which even emigrant Grenigerinnen and Groniger return to see family and friends. Visitors from outside will experience an unvarnished, warm-hearted version of Saarland village culture.
Gronig is located in the St. Wendel region, one of the most scenically attractive corners of the Saarland – the foothills of the Hochwald, mixed forests, rolling hills. The combination of hiking in the Bostalsee region during the day and the village Kirmes in the evening makes the weekend an authentic experience away from the usual festival routes.
In the Saarland, village and patronal church festivals are a firm part of the summer's cultural inventory. The Donatus-Kirmes Gronig is representative of a vibrant village life that has shrunk considerably in some places – and which is being continued here thanks to dedicated club work.
The Donatus-Kirmes spans four days – Friday to Monday. Kirmes Sunday is the religious-ceremonial highlight, and Kirmes Monday is the relaxed conclusion. The organizers and bearers are the municipality of Oberthal, the local council of Gronig, and the local clubs.
The exact program will be communicated in advance by the Gronig local council and the St. Donatus parish community.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the club stalls.
By car via the A1 (exit Nonnweiler) or the B41, then country road to Oberthal/Gronig. By public transport: Bus to Gronig via the saarVV lines from St. Wendel or Tholey.
Free admission. Food and drinks at the club stalls at village prices.
The Sunday morning pint at Gasthaus Andler is the convivial heart of the Kirmes – arrive early, as seats are in high demand. Combining it with a hike around the Bostalsee or in the Hochwald is worthwhile. Those who experience the high mass should not miss the Donatus procession.
