Dark-Wave, Gothic and EBM festival in the historic mountain theatre on the edge of the Thuringian Forest
The Devil Stage Festival is one of the few open-air festivals for the dark scene in Central Germany and has established itself as a permanent fixture in the festival calendar of Thuringia, Hesse and Saxony since its early editions. The focus is on the Bergtheater Friedrichroda — an open-air natural stage carved into the slope of the Reinhardsbrunn park, offering a unique backdrop with its rock walls and old beech trees.
Stylistically, the festival covers the entire spectrum of the dark scene: Dark Wave, Gothic Rock, Synthpop, EBM, as well as related genres of Pagan and Folk Metal. The intimate setting — a manageable number of visitors, one stage, short distances — creates an atmosphere far removed from the large industrial festivals. Small stalls selling mask carvings, leather goods, and jewellery complete the picture.
Behind the festival is wood sculptor and mask maker Markus Völlmer (stage name Berteufel), who lives in Friedrichroda and has been hosting his own events in the mountain theatre for years. His workshop and his artistic masks make the Devil Stage Festival more than just a concert evening — it is a meeting point for a scene that combines craftsmanship, mythology, and music.
The spa town of Friedrichroda in the Gotha district is one of Thuringia's traditional health resorts and is located in the middle of the Thuringian Forest nature park. Those who want to combine the festival with a short break will find hiking trails around the mountain theatre leading to the Großer Inselsberg, the Marienglashöhle cave, and Reinhardsbrunn Castle. Travelling by the Thüringerwaldbahn railway from Gotha is part of the experience.
The 2026 edition is spread over two festival days in the open-air Bergtheater Friedrichroda and brings bands from the Central German dark scene and beyond to the natural stage. The Thuringian pagan metal band Eisregen is confirmed as the headliner — a group that has shaped the German dark metal genre since the 1990s and is playing practically on their doorstep in Friedrichroda.
The organiser is Berteufel Events — the Friedrichroda-based wood sculptor and mask maker Markus Völlmer, who has established the mountain theatre as a permanent venue for dark culture in Thuringia. The complete lineup will be gradually announced in the weeks leading up to the festival on the festival's Facebook page and via eventim-light.
