Franconian Wine Festival on the River Main in the Pilgrimage Town
The Dettelbach Wine Festival on the Main promenade is one of the most charming wine festivals in the Franconian wine region. The festival setting itself is half the battle: behind you lies the medieval, almost completely preserved city wall of Dettelbach with the pilgrimage church of Maria im Sand; in front of you flows the Main, along which the festival tents, stalls, and wine stands are lined up directly on the bank. You'll be sitting at beer tables under old trees, with a view of passing cargo ships, in one of the most beautiful festival locations in the Kitzingen district.
The wine festival traditionally starts every year on Corpus Christi and runs until the following Sunday. The traditional opening on Thursday afternoon by the reigning Dettelbach Wine Princess, accompanied by a procession of the Dettelbach musicians, is a highlight. The Wine Princess is not just a marketing title in Dettelbach but a respected ambassador for the local vintners for her entire term.
Dettelbach is more than just a label on a bottle of Franconian wine. This small town in the Kitzingen district has been an important pilgrimage site since the 15th century, featuring the late Gothic pilgrimage church of Maria im Sand. The historic townscape with its city wall, old half-timbered houses, and Renaissance town hall has remained almost intact, making Dettelbach one of the most beautiful wine towns in Bavarian Franconia. The wine festival combines these two identities – pilgrimage and viticulture – in a relaxed, convivial manner.
Come on Thursday afternoon for the opening with the procession, on Saturday evening for the most atmospheric experience with wine garden music, or on Sunday morning for a relaxed morning pint after the service. Free admission.
The 45th edition of the Dettelbach Wine Festival offers four days of festival atmosphere in one of Franconia's most beautiful riverside locations. Thursday begins with a procession and opening by the reigning Wine Princess, Friday with a beat evening, Saturday with Franconian wine garden music and a happy hour in the afternoon, and Sunday with an ecumenical service and family afternoon to conclude.
Free admission, wine stands from Dettelbach vintners, Franconian cuisine from Bratwurst to Schäufele, all directly on the Main. One of the most traditional folk wine festivals in the Kitzingen district.
