Traditional Kerwe with Dampfknopp specialty and sparkling wines from local vintners on the fourth weekend of August
Wollmesheim is one of Landau's eight town villages and is located in the south of the city at the transition to the Southern Wine Route. With its village core, several local wineries, and an active club structure, it embodies the image of a classic Palatinate wine village.
The Wollmesheim variant of the Palatinate potato specialty gives the Kerwe its name. Dampfknöpp are potato dumplings cooked in a steamer pot and traditionally served in Wollmesheim with roast accompaniments, Schorle (wine mixed with sparkling water), or sparkling wine. The dish has its roots in rural festival cuisine and is still celebrated today, especially at Kerwen, family celebrations, and special occasions.
Unlike many other town village Kerwen, Wollmesheim places a distinct emphasis on sparkling wine as well. In addition to classic Palatinate still wines – Riesling, Burgundy, Cuvées – local vintners also serve Crémants and Pfalz-Sekt. This gives the Kerwe its own character and makes it particularly attractive for lovers of sparkling wines.
The Kerwe traditionally takes place on the fourth weekend of August and extends from Friday to Tuesday. This five-day duration is classic for larger Palatinate wine festivals and allows for different moods: an opening party on Friday, the main festival day on Saturday, a family Sunday, and a more relaxed conclusion on Monday and Tuesday.
The Dampfknopp-Kerwe concludes the series of summer town village Kerwen and leads into September, where the final Kerwen of the season, Queichheim and Mörlheim, follow.
The festival takes place on the village square in the center of Wollmesheim. The local clubs prepare the food and drinks, and the vintners serve from their own stands. Sparkling wine plays a special role.
The complete stage and catering program for 2026 will be published by the local clubs in due time. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
