Street festival on Sophienstrasse for May Day with Junior Brass Band, theatre, Trafo and Maypole raising
The Damenviertelfest Jena is the traditional May Day street festival of the Damenviertel — one of Jena's most characteristic neighbourhoods with its Wilhelminian-era apartment buildings and streets named after female figures from the city's bourgeois family history (Sophienstrasse, Caroline-Schlegel-Strasse). On Friday, May 1, 2026, the neighbourhood celebrates its 13th edition, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Sophienstrasse.
The festival traditionally opens at 11 a.m. with the Maypole raising — City Councillor Kathleen Lützkendorf and District Mayor Cornelia Förster will perform the ceremony. Afterwards, the programme starts with the Junior Brass Band BlechKlang, a brass formation of the Jenaer Musikverein BlechKlang. Later in the day, DJ Smoking Joe will play dance music.
Various cultural institutions in the Damenviertel open their doors:
The Damenviertelfest traditionally emphasizes family-friendliness and sustainable living:
Local stalls provide visitors with bratwurst, crêpes, ice cream, homemade cakes, and drinks. The festival is one of the few street festivals in Jena with a distinctly local character — organised by residents for residents and guests.
The Damenviertel is located west of Jena's city centre, between the Westbahnhof (West Train Station) and the Saale riverbank. The streets are named after women — primarily from the history of Romanticism in Jena, especially Caroline Schlegel-Schelling, who lived here with August Wilhelm Schlegel. Today, the neighbourhood, with its renovated Wilhelminian-era houses and its mix of students, families, and artists, is one of the liveliest districts in the city. The Damenviertelfest makes this character tangible for everyone once a year.
The 13th Damenviertelfest presents the proven programme: Opening at 11 a.m. with Maypole raising, followed by six hours of street festival along Sophienstrasse. Live music, theatre, open-house initiatives from cultural institutions, and a rich children's programme combine for a relaxed May Day in the neighbourhood. The ADFC offers cargo bike test rides, and the Jeninchen zero-waste shop provides information on zero-waste living.
Free admission. Food and drinks at association and resident stalls at moderate prices.
