Open-air theatre at the Alt-Dahn castle ruins with Chawwerusch Theater — “Der zerbrochne Krug” in summer 2026
The Dahner Sommerspiele are an established open-air theatre series that brings a guest performance to the Alt-Dahn castle ruins every summer. On Friday, August 21, 2026, at 8 p.m., the Chawwerusch Theater will stage Heinrich von Kleist's “Der zerbrochne Krug” against the monumental sandstone backdrop of the castle.
Chawwerusch Theater is one of the most distinguished independent theatre ensembles in the Palatinate region and has been a regular guest of the Dahner Sommerspiele for years. Alt-Dahn Castle – an extensive complex of castle ruins in the Dahner Felsenland – offers an extraordinary open-air stage, whose sandstone walls and rock formations give each play its own aura.
Heinrich von Kleist's comedy “Der zerbrochne Krug” (first performed in 1808) is one of the classics of German-language comedy tradition. The play is set in a Dutch village court in the 17th century and exposes a corrupt village judge, Adam, who conducts the trial concerning a broken jug to his own disadvantage. A comedy about power, language, and self-exposure – an unusual open-air venue for a play usually performed indoors, set against the backdrop of Alt-Dahn Castle.
Chawwerusch Theater was founded in the early 1980s and is a fixture of the independent theatre scene in Rhineland-Palatinate. The name “Chawwerusch” comes from Yiddish and means approximately “community” or “cooperative.” The ensemble is known for its direct, physical acting style and its choice of material ranging from classics and folk plays to politically grounded comedies.
Alt-Dahn Castle is an extensive complex of castle ruins, forming the striking castle chain above Dahn together with Grafendahn and Tanstein. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries on a rugged sandstone rock, the complex offers spectacular climbs, narrow rock passages, and wide platforms with views over the Dahner Felsenland. For theatre performances, a suitable area of the castle is equipped with a stage and seating.
Alt-Dahn Castle is only accessible on foot. A steep ascent of about 20–30 minutes leads to the castle from the Burgblick car park. Those who want to experience the play should bring sturdy footwear and – on cool summer evenings – a warm jacket. The atmosphere of an open-air theatre in front of a castle ruin in the Palatinate Forest-Vosges du Nord Biosphere Reserve is incomparable.
