Corpus Christi service by the pond and church festival around St. Valerius in the south of Trier
The high feast of Corpus Christi – the Catholic feast of the Body and Blood of Christ – is traditionally celebrated with particular solemnity in Trier, the oldest city in Germany and also a bishop's seat with centuries of liturgical tradition. In the district of Trier-Süd, the feast in the parish of St. Matthias traditionally culminates in an outdoor festive service and a subsequent church festival around the filial church of St. Valerius.
The day begins with the service by the pond, a charming open-air liturgy amidst the green recreational landscape of Trier-Süd. The area by the pond provides a dignified, nature-oriented setting for the festive Eucharist. Afterwards, the congregation processes to the church of St. Valerius, where the church festival begins.
On the festival grounds around the church, visitors can expect food and drinks, a small catering service with regional specialities, often musical accompaniment, activities for children and families, and plenty of space for socialising and exchange. The festival is supported by numerous volunteers from the parish and is an expression of a vibrant district.
For visitors, the festival is also an opportunity to get to know the church of St. Valerius and the neighbourhood atmosphere of Trier-Süd. Admission is free, and the programme is family-friendly.
The 2026 edition follows the established schedule: open-air festive service by the pond, procession, and a joint church festival. The exact start time and details of the supporting programme (musical accompaniment, catering options, activities for children) will be announced in the parish newsletter and on st-matthias-trier.de.
In case of extreme weather, the service can be moved into the church – however, the church festival on the grounds will usually still take place, possibly in the parish rooms.
The exact programme for 2026 will be communicated in advance by the parish of St. Matthias. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
