Baking, Crafts, and Games on Easter Monday in 40 historic buildings
The Freilichtmuseum am Kiekeberg in Rosengarten-Ehestorf, just on the southern outskirts of Hamburg, is one of the largest and best-known open-air museums in Northern Germany. Across more than ten hectares, the museum displays 40 historic buildings that document rural life in the LĂĽneburger Heide from the 18th to the 20th century. Farmhouses, mills, granaries, craft houses, and farmsteads are reconstructed true to the original and can be visited with authentic furnishings.
The Easter Fun event on Easter Monday is one of the museum's most popular dates. Families from Hamburg, the Harburg district, and the entire LĂĽneburger Heide use the public holiday to experience spring in the museum village. The program is intentionally tailored for families with children, combining classic Easter customs with hands-on craft stations.
Three main program points characterize the day. In the historic bakehouse, bread or Easter plaits are baked according to old recipes, and visitors can follow the demonstrations or lend a hand themselves. At the craft stations, Easter nests, painted eggs, and spring decorations are made. Play activities based on historical models, such as hoop rolling, stilt walking, or sack hopping, complete the program and offer outdoor activity.
A tour through the 40 historic buildings leads through different eras and regions of the Lüneburger Heide. Each house tells its own stories—from the farmhouse to the smithy to the village shop. During the Easter Fun event, hands-on stations or demonstrations of historical crafts are set up in many houses, making the museum experience particularly lively.
The museum's farm animals—chickens, geese, goats, sheep, and horses—are a particular attraction for children at Easter. Lambs and chicks bring the spring atmosphere to the farmyard, and guided tours explain the significance of each animal species for historical agriculture.
The 2026 edition continues the successful format on Easter Monday. Families from Hamburg, the Harburg district, and the entire LĂĽneburger Heide use the public holiday to experience spring in the historic museum village. The program is intentionally designed to be accessible and inviting.
Three main focuses structure the day: the historic bakehouse with demonstrations and hands-on baking, craft stations for Easter nests and spring decorations, and play activities based on historical models. This mix appeals to both children and adults.
