Cityring Concerts β€” Classical Music Under the Open Sky

The Cityring Concerts are the annual classical open-air event held on Friedensplatz in Dortmund's city center. For three evenings, from July 10th to 12th, 2026, the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a program that intentionally bridges genres: between classical symphonies and pop classics, between the concert hall and the city stage.

2026 Program β€” Three Themed Evenings

Friday, July 10, 2026 β€” 'Heroes and Superheroes'

Film music classics conducted by Olivia Lee-Gundermann. The program features iconic soundtracks from Marvel films, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, James Bond, and more β€” performed by an orchestra of around 80 musicians. Starts at 8:00 PM.

Saturday, July 11, 2026 β€” 'Symphonic Rock'

Orchestral arrangements of classic rock songs conducted by Koji Ishizaka. Focus: Queen + Orchestra. Starts at 8:00 PM β€” historically, this is the evening that sells out first.

Sunday, July 12, 2026 β€” 'The Magic of Mozart' + Family Concert

In the morning, there's a free family concert featuring Britten's 'The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra' (registration required). In the evening at 7:00 PM, the Mozart opera 'The Magic of Mozart' follows β€” a 'best-of' production with soloists from the Dortmund Opera.

Friedensplatz β€” The Stage

Friedensplatz, situated between the Dortmund Theater and City Hall, serves as the city's central open-air stage. With a specially erected open-air stage, a professional sound system, and seating for several thousand visitors, it creates a concert hall quality experience under the open sky.

Partnership Constellation

The Cityring Concerts are made possible by an unusual partnership: City-Marketing Dortmund (the business association for the city center), the Dortmund Theater (including the Philharmonic Orchestra), and the Sparkasse Dortmund (main sponsor). This positions the festival as both a cultural event and a strategy to revitalize the city center.

Prices and Discounts

Tickets for the film music and opera galas range from €10–€59. The Symphonic Rock concert is €10–€69. Students and those under 27 receive a 50% discount. Premium VIP seats are available for €150. These prices are significantly below typical classical concert ticket prices, reflecting a deliberate effort to be accessible.

Cityring Concerts — edition 2026

The 2026 Cityring Concerts will feature three thematically distinct evenings over the weekend. A fully equipped open-air stage will be erected on Friedensplatz, complete with seating for several thousand visitors.
