International Church Walk on Whitsun
Goslar is one of the German cities with the densest concentration of churches in its city center. The Marktkirche St. Cosmas und Damian, Jakobikirche, Stephani-Kirche, and other sacred buildings shape the cityscape and together form the framework for the ChurchWalk. The format utilizes the proximity of the buildings and creates a constantly changing concert experience with their different acoustics and atmospheres.
The central Marktkirche opens the ChurchWalk at 6 p.m. With an opening concert or a short devotion, the format is introduced, and visitors are invited to visit further stations throughout the evening. The Marktkirche offers particularly impressive acoustics with its hall structure and its regionally renowned organ.
At 9 and 10 p.m., a Klezmer ensemble will perform in St. Stephani, bringing the sound world of Eastern European Jewish tradition into the sacred space with clarinet, violin, accordion, and double bass. From 11 p.m., St. Jakobi takes over with guitar impressions, concluding the evening in an intimate atmosphere.
The term ChurchWalk refers to the international tradition of church walks, which has become established in the English-speaking world and is adopted in Goslar in its own form. Thus, the event combines local tradition with a format that is also familiar to international guests.
Whitsun is an important tourist date in Goslar, attracting many visitors to the city. The ChurchWalk fits into this weekend and offers a culturally sophisticated alternative to classic city tours.
The 2026 edition adheres to the established format. Visitors can choose whether to attend all stations or to specifically visit individual concerts. The time intervals between performances are designed to allow for walks between churches.
With the Marktkirche organ, Klezmer ensemble, and guitar impressions, the program deliberately encompasses different stylistic worlds, utilizing the unique atmosphere of each of the three churches.
Additional churches and program points will be announced by the organizer in the spring. The exact stations, times, and programs will be communicated via the City of Goslar website.
