About Christmas in Barendorf
Christmas in Barendorf — edition 2026
2026 Edition
The 2026 edition runs in the classic format over two Advent weekends, each Saturday and Sunday from 12 PM to 7 PM. The organizers are the Museums of the City of Iserlohn, who manage the historic Maste-Barendorf factory complex as the host site.
As every year, the focus is on the combination of traditional crafts (glass, wood, jewelry, textiles), contemporary art, and live demonstrations in historic workshops. New for 2026: the Needle Museum, opened in 2025, which documents the industrial history of Iserlohn and is open during the Christmas market.

Maste-Barendorf — an Industrial Monument as a Museum Village
In the Barendorf district of Iserlohn, on the banks of the Baarbach stream, lies one of Westphalia's most unusual museum complexes: the Maste-Barendorf Museum Village, a historic needle factory that was in operation from the second half of the 18th century. Iserlohn was one of the most important centers for German needle production — the city was a world leader in pin manufacturing in the 19th century. The Maste-Barendorf factory complex preserves this industrial history: water power, half-timbered houses, old workshops, and residences of factory owners and workers. Today, it is managed by the Museums of the City of Iserlohn.
Christmas Market in the Historic Rooms
Since 1996 — for almost 30 years — the "Christmas in Barendorf" market has taken place here on the 2nd and 3rd Advent weekends. The stalls are set up in the historic half-timbered houses, in the restored workshops, and in wooden huts between the buildings. The concept deliberately focuses on artisanal quality: traditional craftsmanship (blacksmithing, glass, wood, ceramics, leather, jewelry, textiles) meets contemporary design and handicrafts.
Live Demonstrations in the Workshops
The open artist workshops create a special atmosphere: a glassblower works in front of an audience over an open flame, the historic rope-making facility is demonstrated — a machine that twists natural fibers into long ropes — and in the former pin factory, demonstrations of historic lathes take place. In 2025, the newly established Needle Museum opened, documenting the industrial history of Iserlohn and pin manufacturing — an additional attraction for 2026.
Music Program and Catering
Different musicians perform each day: brass ensembles, children's choirs, jazz soloists — the musical program combines pre-Christmas classics with more modern sounds. Regional caterers and service clubs (Rotary, Lions) cooperate on food and drinks: mulled wine, punch, coffee, fresh waffles, potato pancakes, bratwurst — and consistently also vegetarian and non-alcoholic options. Proceeds from food and drink sales go to charitable projects of the service clubs.
Tradition Since 1996
With nearly 30 years of history, Christmas in Barendorf is one of the oldest and most atmospheric district Christmas markets in the Sauerland region. Organized by the Museums of the City of Iserlohn, supported by volunteer commitment and the aim of making the historical substance of the factory complex accessible to a broad public.
